Has anyone cut back or reshaped a sail before?

I have an old but little used NP 'Warp Orientated' wave sail back from the 90's, complete with pastel colors. From memory it was about 5m, and fairly reasonable condition, but probably not what todays wave sailors would be after.

What I don't have is a small sail to teach the kids with, something around 2-3m. So at the risk or ruining an otherwise ok sail that is never going to be used, I though of cutting back the leech, possibly leaving much of the upper mast sleeve and shifting in the batten pockets.
From some learner sails I had seen, I think they had no battens anyhow, and were pretty basic.

I have had a look for s/h learner rigs, maybe its a waste of time. Also, there's an industrial sewing machine in the family, so it's just going to be some time and a few beers.

Any tips from the braintrust?

Take out the batterns, template the outside edge of the sail, carefully unstitch the outside edge, cut down using the template, restitch the outside edge, install the cut down batterns.

Or,

Remove the batterns, unstitch the luff, make a template of where the luff joins the sail, cut down the sail using the template, sew the luff back on, cut down the batterns and whala, you have a smaller sail.

Or,

Stop piss farting around and buy a 2.5 m sail. Hit up SHQ and see if they have an old ex hire one around. I rememer a full kids rig going in the clasifieds for $250

Or,

Use the 5m sail as a beginner rig. Anyone over 10 should be fine with a 5.0.

The other day Kato was teaching a beginner using his 7.5m Koncept!

nice find sausage.
Scissors are going to come out now for sure.
(my outdoor umbrella uses a timber pole, so maybe I should laminate a nice timber boom to match?)
