Proudly presented by Elwood Sailboarders, The ZU Boardsports, Severne and Windsurfing Victoria, King of the Bay is the search for The King (or the Queen) of the Bay.
R you ripping in 25+ knot Bay conditions with a combination of aerials, wave-rides and freestyle than you could be the new King for 2013 ! But if flippin' aint your thing, don't worry as we will have two divisions. As long as you can give it a crack in 25 knots, the event is for you !
You can also win two 75% carbon Severne rdm Gorilla masts with two years unlimited warranty in The Go-Hard Go-Rilla part of the comp. The highest Jump of the day (landing not necessary) will win one mast and the other one will go in a mast throwing competition !

Let's go Nuts !!!
Lets Get This Cooking! An awesome event to go huge and get reckless!
Ill be heading down and will hopefully meet a huge amount of the the Melbourne sailors!
Full Throttle 100%
Sounds like a fun way for everyone to push each other. Perfect for all those pussys who have been talking of forwards for a couple of years now! You know who you are.. Tom, nick!
just hope it's not on until march
Think I'll leave this one for the pro's and Red Bull infused maniacs :) Should draw a good crowd - I know I'll be there to watch, cheer and cringe as well as take some amateur video. Looking forward to it!
Don't I know it! I will soon be the only one in Melbourne that can't loop. Better grow some balls....
'They say champions aren't born... they're made ~ The Rock
so... lets make them! King of the Bay - Friday 5pm!
It's gonna be windy enough to put white caps in your tea!
BRING THE PAIN! ![]()
Waiting to confirm - looking likely with the forecast, but wait for the official word from the F/B page.
Shame I can't make it as it would have been fun to be surrounded by sailors getting reckless... Hope you get the wind as the forecast I am looking at doesn't suggest it will be full power (unless you are rocking a big sail)
Ok, a quick update on how we are going to run it. We are ready to roll so we are now waiting for the first solid 30 Knot + conditions so we can run the competition !
Competition Format
1. Briefing time to be nominated when event is called on FB, email, seabreeze etc. This will be between 5-6pm on a weekday and after noon on a weekend. The official decision to run KOTB will not be decided until the briefing. It will only be run when the conditions are extreme. Every entrant must sign a wavier form. Entrants signing the wavier form agree on the following;
a. You enter entirely at your own risk. This is a competition in extreme conditions that could ultimately result in severe injury or death.
2. One open division.
3. Competitors will be split into Group A and B. The groups shall be divided so the best windsurfers evenly split into two groups (i.e. don't have all the best guys in one group)
4. Conduct two separate Expressions Sessions for Groups A and B which last 20mins each. During each of the expression sessions, we would request people not in sailing in the heat to sail 250m upwind or downwind of the competition area or assist in judging (refer to next section for judging criteria). Depending on number of entrants, the top 4 or 5 from Group A and B will proceed to the final.
5. One final with 8 to 10 competitors of 20mins to determine KING OF THE BAY! The final will be judged by the ZU representatives with a scoring sheet (see attached).
Judging Criteria
Expression Sessions
1. Expressions sessions will be judged on who is the most dynamic, courageous and best sailor. We are also looking for variety as well (not just one manoeuvre). The top sailors from the expression session will be decided from a general consensus of the spectators that is not sailing and the ZU representatives. The ZU representatives will have the final decision on who should proceed into the final.
2. Jumps must be performed in the jumping zone (basically between the beach and a bit beyond the yellow pole. This is where the waves are and the biggest jumps will occur. The judges are not expected to see a jump done miles out to sea.
Final
1. Final will be judged on best 2 jumps (10 points each with a potential maximum 20 points). There will be 3 judges for the final. We are looking for big extreme manoeuvres and variety. Someone who does two massive forwards should not score higher than someone who does a massive forward and a backloop for example. However, two massive forwards should score higher than someone doing a tiny forward and backloop. The KOTB champion should have shown the he/she has a big pair of bullocks and performed manoeuvres that are fearless. Freestyle manoeuvres will also be considered if its too hard to distinguish the KOTB. HOWEVER, IF ANY WINDSURFER PERFORMS A DOUBLE LOOP IN THE EXPRESSION SESSION OR FINAL IS INSTANTLY AWARDED KOTB!!
2. Jumps must be performed in the jumping zone (between the beach and a bit beyond the yellow pole. This is where the waves are and the biggest jumps will occur. The judges are not expected to see a jump done miles out to see)
Prizes
1. The KOTB Champion will be awarded the prestigious "King of The Bay Crown"
2. Severne Gorilla Mast for biggest jump. You do not require to land the jump.
3. Severne Gorilla Mast for a mast throwing competition. Who can javelin throw a mast the furthest distance!
4. Slab of beer for the best double forward attempt.
Safety Items
1. The jumping zone can get congested. Please observe the water in front of you if you are going to jump and make sure it is clear. When sailing back into the beach, stay upwind of the jumping zone and any sailor who is jumping.
2. We request that everyone not sailing in a heat windsurfs 250m upwind or downwind of the competition area or spectates from the beach.
Post Event
We will have an informal presentation at La Porchetta to crown the KOTB. We request everyone chip in $10 so we can buy some pizzas and a few jugs of beer.
There is still time to sign up, conditions have been epic lately so better check out the Elwood Sailboarders Facebook page and "attend" the event.
