Video from the helmet of a windsurfer on Port Phillip Bay shows a dangerous near miss with a jet-skier.

They were f@#king annoying around bonbeach all weekend! Why they must turn right infront of you and go flying by within 10 meters and then look at you to say "Hey look how cool I look "

Idiots!

We had a few @ Invy on Saturday, snaking between swimmers from the boat ramp to the Angling Club....really dangerous, given there was very little water in the channel and kids/ families everywhere.

There was a bit of karma though.....one particular Jetski rider had been deliberately buzzing us on the outer bank and he must have run too shallow and sucked in some sand...the tide was racing out, and I sailed passed him as he desperately tried to get the thing started...once he got around Pensioners Point, things got a bit more desperate and he asked me if I could give him a tow!
I told him he could jump off and stand up where he was, and beach the thing on the bank, and the tide would turn in about half an hour so he could float back!!!
That's not wrong is it??

Government buy back needed.
Very sad about the swimmer, though thats a fair way off shore to swim.
At Elwood its not unusual for a swimmer to be 50m off shore and swim out of the no boating zone right across the line of the windsurfers why a swimmer would put themselves in that much risk I dont know either.

Dead at 51 from a swim at the beach is such a tragedy.

Perhaps they need some sort of 'channels' marked by bouys that extend 200m out to sea where jet skis go in and out from the beach and swimmers are kept out of harms way.

Clearly its an adrenalin rush for the guys riding them and they just get carried away and do stupid things too close to shore and swimmers etc

the yellow markers with No PYC on them are the jet ski markers.

You can have all the laws you want - but I rarely see anyone enforcing them. Might have seen a police boat once this whole season, and have been out nearly every weekend.......

In QLD there are as many police boats as there are cars (so it seems) on the Nerang river.... people getting booked all the time on that water..... you just don't see that down here..... If I was an officer I'd make sure I am on the water all the time

Tell a petrol head that they can buy a 250 HP rocket that will outrun almost anything a license costs $150 and rego is $70 and see them line up.

Banning them is silly, restricting the use can be usefull but most of all - EDUCATION on how when and where to use them will be more benificial.

There are a lot of Jet skiier's out there that you don't see. They're out in the middle of the bay doing their thing without anyone knowing about it.

Don't paint these people with the same brush as the 'hoons'.

What happened on the weekend is an unfortunate accident. The jet skier is going to have to live with this for the rest of his life.

I wonder if theres any split in jet ski-ing between sit-down and stand-up?

I've sailed at a lake thatalso did both types of jetski and they did seems to appeal to different types.

I've enjoyed stand-up. Its a challenge, needs learning and takes some skill to even get going.

The sit-down I found a bit boring as there was nothing left to learn after 10 mins(OK proper wave riding them must take skill, as must racing.
I'm sure they can be ridden skillfully but they dont REQUIRE it)
Its like a fairground ride. The thrill is more about speed and not skill.

Easy fix. Just include as part of the licence test "Must have opposable thumbs".

i have actually been hit by a jet ski whilst sailing. Guy was out of control, going 30m parallell to beach (crowded).

The only thing that saved me was to pop into a small jump (reflex reaction- not due to skill), the undersurface of the board bounced off the jetski, he fell off and the safety cord stopped the jet ski. This would have saved him hitting people as he admitted he didnt know what he was doing. He copped a spray from everyone

Very sad for the family of this victim- even us sailors need to be so careful with swimmers close to shore.

We too need to look out for swimmers when sailing!

One time Wsurfing from Williamstown to Kerford road i missed a guy by meters doing around 25 kts about 500m off the beach. He was swimming towards williamstown, I guess in preparation to the Port Melb to Willy swim.
Due to the angle of the sun on the water he was hard to see, at the last minute I had to swerve big time to avoid a collision. It scared the crap out of me, smashing into a guy with a 40cm slalom fin wouldn't be nice.

He didn't even know I just missed him and kept swimming.

To the guy in the vid, nice air by the way :)
