This weekend the Southerlies are in and it will be damn cold but good winds. Plenty of HTFU and Red Bull(For Kona lad). Where is everyone heading?
both Invo and Pt Danger are looking really good for the w/e!
Anyone else planning a drive Torquay way Saturday? I'm keen but don't want to sail in the waves alone... although if it is 20-25 knots SW with some swell I'm guessing there will be a few out there to keep me company ![]()
Might see you at Invo on Sunday Old Salty ![]()
ejmack - tich tich. A great time to give the Kode a spin and leave me for dead on the IWC speed table
Hey Mick
From one extreme to the other! 5 kts last Sunday at Safety Beach to 25 Kts this w/e.
Oh well variety is the spice of life![]()
Hope to be on the water by 4am for a long windy day at the Pit, then Invy on Sat for the speed clinic. Play time ![]()
Sailor Sam,
If the open beaches will have 6' waves, what size will you get at Pt Leo or Shoreham???
is ground swell only or does the SW wind whip up some wind swell?
You do get ground swell rolling into Western Port and providing you get more SSW-S winds "Crunchies" provides a really neat starboard jumping, reasonable wave to ride. However the wind is pretty flukey on that break if only SW.
If the wind is SW, you can sail straight off the "Point" of Point Leo out into a break called Suicide. It picks up alot more swell and is a fairly heavy wave just shy of high tide. Requires a bit of confidence.
If there is a really big swell on the back beaches, you occaisionally get a gem of a wave at Shoreham. I say "gem" cautiously as I know it is all relative to what you are used - but it does ramp up beautifuly and is a great spot to learn a new aerial move.
BUT......All of the above needs a rising / high tide and a very solid SW wind or preferably something more southerly.
Here endeth the lesson.....thanks be to the windgods. ![]()
I got a good 2 hours in at Leo today, was comfortable, if not a little over powered at times on my 5.0. You can really notice the difference in water temps, sailed 2 weeks ago at Rye and the water feels cold!
Did any of you guys do the drive to Torquay, how was it ?
Tried to sail at Hampton today at around 2:30 pm. Went out just as the wind dropped from 17 knts to 6. Timed it NOT to perfection. Heading to Barwon Heads on Monday for a few days and intend to pick up a new 3/4 wettie at Torquay providing the prices are as good as last year.
Forgot the booties but might be just as well as they stink! Always wash them out. May have to buy a new pair though. How do other dry theirs to avoid such a putrid smell?
waggles56, don't wear em, windaddict, do you drive a suby wagon? might of seen you driving into pt leo as i was driving out
That was me in the green Subi. . . . . Managed to get things very wrong in the search for a spot to sail on Sat! I didn't listen to my own advice and arrived at Pt Leo on a falling tide! Drove to Parkdale for a 2pm sail and found zilch wind and ended up having only a reasonable off Safety Beach. Thankfully there were a few other sailors who were pulling off backloops/Vulcans etc and made the afternoon worthwhile.
How was your sail at Pt Leo?
I arrived at Pt Leo just before 2pm, and like you said Sailor Sam, it was low tide. But the wind was pretty strong, was sometimes a little over powered on my 5.0, and there were some nice boom high waves, and the occasional one that rolls into the little bay were you launch from, good for jumping. Got out of the water around 4.30pm...
I did drive to Shoram first and it looked pretty crap, the wind wasn't getting in at all, and it looked like no wind out the back either, but luckily I decided to pop into Leo on the way back, and to my surprise the sand was blowing around the point near the stairs and two other guys were already out...sweet!
As I packed up, another guy was just hitting the water as well.
I was pretty surprised to see how much wind was at south channel (and sandy pt)compared to fawkner on saturday - I sailed on sat morning at williamstown on a ?6.6 and had to do the "bearaway and pump" thing to get on the plane.
Did anyone get out today? I did the keelboat racing thing off sandringham(so slow...) and we got a few 15+ knot gusts out there only in the rain bands. mostly 12 kts.
i went for a 2 slog run/sink in deep brown water at elwood,, lots of plastic bags , branches, turds and tammys in a healthy 10-15kts onshore ...
fell in, got brain freeze, swore a lot - went home...... ![]()
if your readin this mike, i cleaned the board, it's still white ![]()
