Hey,
Nice crosshore session at Gnotuk yesterday, and apart from having a kiter trash his kite after trying launch upwind of all our gear (and get tangled up on Roy's rig), we had two dolphins come and play out the back. Its such an awesome thing to think we are only 25-ish K's from the middle of the city and we an environment that is healthy enough to have this type of wildlife close by.
Any damage to Roy's rig and how did the conversation go down after the entanglement?
Must have been magic amongst the Dolphins![]()
Stuck at home replacing gutters![]()
No damage to Roy's (err Fireman's Sam's) gear. In fact, now that it has a taste for kites we might have to contain it!
She's a wild beastie now she has a taste for PVC !
I do feel for the guy though... no one likes to see broken equipment = $, but like Drift said... of the whole beach... why launch right over our gear ?!
I don't think his public gallery (WAGS) were too happy either !
So Fireman Sam - You will have a new job at Invy - Clear the waterway of Kiters before the Southerly Busters hit the water![]()
I had 2 pop out on me, out the back at Port Fairy tonight.
Dolpins - not kites ![]()
They were about 3m away from me.
I had just compleated a slow gybe.
Spooked me a bit.
Thankfully it doesn't take much to recognize them as "friend"
Magic.
I have encountered dolphins many times while riding and they just ignore me. I ride along in their direction but they just cruise.
I did get to hang with a dolphin in the surf at Waratah Bay once. It just lolled around. It was right next to me but it wouldn't let me touch it. It would just roll to keep just out of reach.
It got interested if I went for a paddle and it would swim alongside like we were having a paddling race. If I caught a wave it would lose interest and head out the back again.
The 2 I saw on Sunday were the little black ones that are unique to the Bay.
Cruising out the back when out of the corner of my eye I saw a dark fin.
I think before I even had time to think about it, the dolphins come up breathe.
I sailed for a bit along their track and then I gybed. They followed for a bit and I could hear their breaths, then they swam away towards Mordi.
Such a cool thing to have happen...
