Hi dude. Rye won't be good in a SW so if it has to be one of the 2 go bono. There will be more sailors there also. Bare in mind that if it is over 20 you will probably find bono a bit too much.

Sandringham harbour or Hampton would be the pick for a beginner.

Stick to the Sandy harbour, I wouldnt recommend Hampton for a learner unless its a very light wind say around 10 knots, it would be to easy for a learner to get washed into one of those rock walls at Hampton.

You get a few people every now and then. Hampton is a little more sheltered when compared to other beaches in SSW conditions due to the breakwall, but for an absolute beginner, Jman is right, Sandy Beach is perfect.

Progressing from there you can go to Hampton or St Kilda.

Rye is best in a Northerly. But you hadly get those in summer down there becuase the seabreezes kill em.

Yeah, quite a few beginners start in Sandrihghan harbour (where SHQ run lessons) and gradually work their way further out of the harbour as they gain experience. Hampton Beach is tricky in a SW as it is onshore and there can be a mean (for a bay beach) shore break. Hampton is better on a southerly or SSE for learning as it is flatter. There are quite a few regular beginners at Hampton, at least 10 or more, so easy to join in with them. Be warned that there are also many kiters beginning as well so LOOK out. Good luck.
