The Port Esperance Sailing Club (Dover) will be holding a 'learn to windsurf' day this Saturday the 15th September.

Dave Wood, the Club Commodore, has collected the six Windsurfing Tasmania Learner Boards from the RYCT, so these will all be available for use on the day.

There are already over a dozen youngsters signed up to give it a go, plus a lot of older folk!!

The event will start around 10am and there will be a BBQ at the club at around 1pm (plus bar facilities).

This is an invitation to all to come down and help out or just bring your gear and go for a casual sail in the bay to support the day.

I'll be there from around 9am to help set-up the boards.

The weather is looking pretty good, with a light to moderate WNW wind forecast. Could be ideal for getting the larger boards out on the water!!

There is a sandy beach with grassy rigging area and plenty of parking. Dover is around 1hr drive south of Hobart.

If anyone needs any more info, let me know. Hope to see you there!!

Sounds like it will be perfect, sunny weather for the Port Esperance 'learn to windsurf' day. Be good to get a few sailors down to either assist or get out on the water for a sail. BBQ and Beer around midday. Hope to see you there.

Unfortunately I'm working, otherwise I'd hook up a rope from my 4WD to my 11YO daughter (Lana) and drag her away from Minecraft (computer game) and get her down there. Last summer she was getting confident in the water, and said she wanted to attend one of the learner days. If Sharyn can manage to get her down there, I'll be grateful to you guys for your efforts. If not, then maybe the next one.

The day went well. Sunny and a nice wind of around 5-10 knots, gusting up to 12-15 further out in the bay. About 15 people got out on the learner boards. Some were a bit too young to really get them going, but had fun being sailed around on them! The others all picked it up really quickly and were sailing back and fourth really well. The wind was offshore, so the water was really flat and the rescue people just towed people back in toward the shore as soon as anyone got out to far, giving them the opportunity to do it all over again.

I didn't get any photos, but I think Ant did and there was a guy with a good camera there who got about 50, so will try to get hold of some of those to post. A few adults had a go that had never windsurfed and they couldn't believe how easy the boards were to learn on, they just got up and went!!

BBQ and beer went down well afterwards.

The colour photos above certainly provide a lot more detail than my sketchy scanned version, but the day was captured in The Huon News, which was great to see:
