When I rigged sails to the recommended specs, they occasionally rubbed against the boom arms on the Mail Sails boom, so it seems like a good idea to widen the back-end.

Sure, here are a few pics to compare the curves. I was surprised that the North boom is narrower at the front. I might try moving from 28" to 30" harness lines to compensate and see how it feels. Maybe that it part of the reason why Victor F uses 34" harness lines.

By the way, the boom heads are centered above each other in the photos. It is just the photo angles that makes it look misaligned.

Hi, is it possible to fit an SDM adapter into the North 140-190 boom? Websites states included adapter RDM but does this mean an SDM adapter could not be fitted instead if required? Thanks

Sure. This was quicker to markup than explain in words, so a quick sketch is below :)

I also measured the boom diameters as follows (with a ruler but it felt reasonably accurate)...

Maui Sails carbon = 30mm with grip (quoted 30mm for 2016 website)
2016 North Platinum Aero = 29mm with grip (quoted 27.5mm)
2016 North Silver Slalom = 32mm with grip (quoted 30mm)
2016 North Red Slalom = 32mm with grip (quoted 30mm)

I think Maui Sails quote diameters with grip whilst North quote diameters without grip.

It is surprising that you can feel the 1mm difference between the Maui Sails 30mm and North 29mm.

I am wondering why they call it 100% carbon - when the trace threads (blue and white) gives it away as having something else...... glass, kevlar, innegra, polyester etc can all be dyed but carbon can't.
So it ain't 100% carbon.

Not saying that is a bad thing, many things benefit from the stiffness of carbon but need a mix of materials to get the best of both worlds.
Just seems a bit deceptive...?

Then the reason we can see it is the grip not running all the way to the front ....... which makes me think why DO we grip booms all the way where it is not needed...?


Widetail on wavebooms is inexplicable, can see it will be the thing to have next season.....

Yes, an SDM adapter can be fitted if required.
