went for a sail at Burrum heads thurs, all this wind and nowhere to sail.Thought Id catch some runs before the tide ,was ok 15-20kn sse.7.0m and 104l .nobody else around,The water was just about black.then on the outerbank was a boat and some guys standing around,as I got closer it looked like they were investigating a beached whale, but when i sailed up to have a look, too my shook it was a Dugong that they had speared and were slaughtering on the bank,Now the water is turning red, time to head in,asking some locals about what Id seen they seemed to think alls well, the last study they did they counted 6 dugongs in the area, now their is only 5!

So do we presume then traditional people in the area have the right to kill these animals?

Edit: ah, yes, they do:

WTF?! I'm not going to believe for one moment that there is a local tribe living off the land in Hervey Bay, thats BS, you dont get to eat dugong one week and KFC the next!
The waters in these parts used to be full of dugong especially Rainbow and Tin Can Bay until our dear friends of the ol mother land set up a Dugong Abotoir and canning facility and wiped out the thousands of them to just a hand full.
They should be 110% protected in SE Qld , no matter what race you are or what background you have! Hope you called the authoritys to get them checked out, sad story would have been crap to see also. Would have been great to get a photo of it and let the media get hold of it, if the Bulk of the population knew that **** was going on it would be stopped immediatly! especially with the votes it may buy at the upcoming election.
