I just moved here a week ago and was interested in giving windsurfing a go here. I have only done it once before. Did anybody want to go and check it out some time.
When the winds up 10+ 15+ knots everyone seems to go to Illawong beach (south of town beach near citibeach volleyball). Its usually blowing a SE but NE is much nicer as the wind blows over east point and you get much less chop and waves.
I have been sailing a bit at North Wall (just north of the mackay harbour wall). Seems to be a decent spot and isn't so bad to sail at at low tide. Unlike illawong where at low tide its about 1km to the water. Struck the sailing club having comps in the bay the last two saturdays so it seems to be a decent spot for sailing!
Wish I had a bigger sail though, my 5.3m is not cutting it on 10 knot days, need a 6.5m.
Gday Imagine,
As windy said the main spot is Illawong above half tide. More wind usally more people. Come and say g'day if your around and we can try and get you on the right track. For learning on the bigger gear and with less waves Kinchant Dam is a good option and good for a bbq as well. Can get gusty if its very southerly tho.
Cheers Phil
