the problem is that i dont know much about windsurfers and on seabreeze they all come in seperate bits like board than sails and than a mast ect. like there not just a package deal. and i dont know what bits go with what boards..
yes, agree with the above three posts too ![]()
we really need a sticky type thread that provides some useful info for people like yourself looking for gear to begin with
in general:
the older the gear the heavier it will be due to the construction
the board you are looking at would probably be a blow-moulded plastic board which is heavy, but as a positive thing, it will be quite durable and resist most damage that occurs when learning. You will certainly be able to learn with it, as people have done in the past, but learning would most likely be quicker and more enjoyable on a more modern board design for learning the basics (i'm only assuming you are just starting out) ![]()
Go visit a shop!!!
that board is worth nothing. Would be crap to learn on compared to more current gear, and is essentially a waste of your money.
Sorry mate, just saw you were in hervey bay. Call board crazy in Brisbane and talk with simon. 0738916470 He can put you in touch with people up your way to help you out with learning.
That board is still a waste of your money.
i had a quote from a board shop and the were around $1000 and im only 15 so i dont have that sort of money at the moment.. i might just keep saving until i have enough for a decent one
Looks like you may out grow that after a few months its beginers stuff, doubt you would sell it for $350 if at all, i would say $200 max and hes lucky to sell it at all, can you pick it up as it would be expensive to send by courier.
Always a gamble on ebay with anything, seabreeze the guys are fair(generally) but a shop will point you in the right direction and probably buy it back when you out grow it, good luck!
that is very old gear - I learned to sail on gear like that in the 80s - I reckon $200 is top - you would struggle to resell it when you had learned - boards like that last forever & people throw them away - sails could be suspect - that material can rot & deteriorate with age - booms - ditto. If it was hardly used back in the 80s, and has been stored really well & you can get it cheap - well you get out on the water - but I recokon you could do better on here & go & see the shops - they have older sails that are hard to sell - & they want to clear them as they are sound too good to throw away - but not in demand -
Ok sean so here is the low down with your situation - You're young, a beginner and dont have much cash.... Dont worry we've all been there... ![]()
I have basically narrowed your options down to 2. I will outline both below-
1. Your first option is to stick with your budget outlined earlier ($200-$400). Just so you are fully aware this is a very low budget but could still get you out on the water if you choose to still go down this path. There are some disadvantages however if you chose to stick to your original budget.
- Firstly the gear will be old and heavy which haircut outlined earlier. When learning this is not ideal as it makes the learning period more tiresome, which effectively reduces the time you spend learning on the water.
- Secondly the mast will most likely be a 1 piece mast which will make travelling to and from the beach/lake/river a little harder.
- But the biggest advantage of buying more modern equipment (newer than approx 10-12 years old) is that it is much easier to use and learn the fundamentals and basics. The learning period is usually shortened dramatically. Basically what I'm trying to say is that if your dedicated and want to learn the basic of windsurfing, it will happen alot faster for you on more modern gear than the older stuff
If you choose to go down this path, check out these ebay ads-http://cgi.ebay.com.au/windsurfer-HiFly-Spirit-345-/180618981231?pt=AU_Sport_Surfing&hash=item2a0dbaef6f

2. Now your second option is to try and get that budget up a little higher... If you could get it up to anywhere between $600-$1000 you would have a much better chance to buy equpiment that will be lighter, easier to use/learn and possibly have some "pieces" (mast/boom/extensions) that will last you alot longer than your original purchase.
Eg. If you can get your hands on an "ok" boom or mast, it may last you well into your 2nd or 3rd sail purchase if you get that far... The newer equipment you can get the more interchangable it can/will be with other reasonaly modern gear....
I would definately suggest going down the second option....
It is challenging but like someone else mentioned earlier, a local windsurfing shop should help... Also If you can get down to the sunshine coast I maybe able to assist with different bits and pieces as I have ALOT of older gear floating around which maybe useful....
Goodluck ![]()
here's my 2 cents worth,
if you intend to buy from ebay get the address and phone and have a look at it.
just watch it untill it ends and if it hasn't sold ring the seller and offer a ridiculously low price for it - $10 - $20. take the board leave him with the rest then use what you have left to buy a decent/more modern sail, mast n boom etc. which you can keep for your next board upgrade.
if it sells don't worry just move onto the next one, as there seems to be plenty about.
buy what you can afford, while all the above comments about learning on newer gear hold true don't discount older gear especially if you cant't afford newer stuff. I've been sailing for over 25yrs and all my gear is 10-15 years old and still gets me on the water, still use an old bic beep bop (probably the same age as the board your looking at)in light winds and still have fun on it.![]()
if you can only afford old buy old, but look at it before u buy, take someone with you who knows about the sport if you can. don't let only being able to buy older stuff put you off windsurfing ![]()
Most of us older sailors learned on that sort of equipment. If you only want to spend a small amount, I think this equipment will do.
200 is a fair price. 350 is not out of the question. It just depends on how badly you want it and how badly the seller wants to sell.
Getting it from Brisbane to Hearvy Bay is your main issue. If that is going to cost you money, then a little patience will probably turn up something close to home.
my mums partner said that he would drive me down to pick it up because he has roof racks, but i thought that $350 might of been a little bit expensive for what it was.
Windsurfing gear of any type old or relatively new, is easy to buy and very hard to sell. So the comments above that tell you that its worth nothing are in that respect correct. If you wait long enough and look hard enough someone will offer you something similar for free. Its just a matter of when you want it.
As you pointed out it is difficult for a beginner to put a full kit together and there are no cheap modern learner boards around. I have a set of similar age at the Lake Cootharaba Sailing club but I haven't tried assembling it to see if anything is missing. You could have that for 100 dollars or less depending on the condition when we rig it. The lake is also two hours closer to Hearvy Bay. I will be there all weekend.

would you have any photos of the rig? i would be very interested in that, i just dont know if i can get down there as my mum has the car in brisbane atm.
Hi guys (Tony & Sean), re Sean's other topic here "Windsurfing at Harvey Bay", I have offered a board and sail, so let me know what eventuates with Tony's offer so we don't double up....
