after meeting up with some old friends from 15 or so years ago at the windwanders meet at bribie isl on the weekend i got to thinking about our old sailing grounds in NQ and searched for photos or info, only to find out there seems to be more kiters there than us. easter and may day weekends would attract people from all over NQ and weekends with a decent SE blowing would see an exodous from townsville to alva, anyway here are some old old pics from mid 90's, they don't do the place justice as there wasn't much wind, but out the back on a good day expect head high swell breaking on the bars . if your travelling through Ayr check it out you may get lucky. If anyone from up north has any recent photos , i'd love to see them as would 'm sure a couple of others who are now down here would.
I remember sailing Alva many years back. One of our team members call in only last year. Apparently the bars have changed. I keep an eye on Alva forcast but it never seems to get higher that 15-20knots. Use to love going down on a May day weekend and so did the police. Booked me every year Now the place is full of teabaggers.
Due to the sandbars it's not that good for windsurfing anymore,but a good wet season can change all that with a good flushout.Several of us drive past Alva now and sail Bowen as the wind is better and more reliable.With all the sandbars and super smooth water it has become a haven for kiters but a good wet could give it back to us as when I have sailed there it has been good with the super flat water leading out to the surf.
Now the place is full of teabaggers.
