time again for the annual windwanderers winter meet at bribie island.

this year we will look towards several spots to make the most of the weather. so on the cards are bongaree, pebble beach, sylvan beach or Woorim. all within 20 minutes of each other. We will also chase the wind with this meet. so when the weekend of the 20th arrives if the forecast is not good we will postpone till the following week and on until we get wind. fingers crossed.

this years winter meet is once again sponsored sponsored by Caloundra Wind & Surf and will see the usual cold weather, bbq and chilled beer.

Currently the longrange forecast is showing SW wind potential for the weekend of the 20/21.

hope to see the wind on the water and the wetsuits on!

cheers
J

this is going to be a hard one to pick.

i'm not convinced we'll get strong NE winds at this time of year.

fingers crossed though.

will decide saturday as sunday looks the only day to produce wind.

Looking like zip on Saturday but a useful easterly on Sunday. Can you swap it to Sunday or is that not on?

only tomorrow will tell i guess.

the decision was made at the last meet that unless it's blowing we'll hold as no one turns up when there is no wind.

i just don't buy the 20 knot forecast. marine services show the wind that strong offshore but only 10-15 knots on the coast.

i could be wrong of course.

edit' p.s. there is another low predicted to form for next weekend.

Have a great sail next weekend providing the wind happens. I'll be heading north to Cape York for a month so hopefully will sail again in the warmer months

hi guys,

bribie is still the location.

at this early stage sunday is looking to be the day. however. both saturday or sunday are possible days. i will call it late friday and send out the confirmation email. if the forecast downgrades then we will postpone again.

i encourage everyone to have a look on google earth. WSW and SW are very good directions for the southern tip of bribie with an 8km fetch.

fingers crossed.

at the meet there will be demo gear available.

cheers.

<update>

meet will be held on sunday at bongaree. kick off time 12 noon for bbq.

high tide around 3pm.

the plan for the day is

begin at bongaree,
spend a couple of hours on the water and hold the bbq, (WSW)
then "if" the wind has swung (SW) move to pebble beach in the late arvo
to mix things up and enjoy the flat water blasting.

pebble beach is across the passage from bongaree and only 10 minutes drive back acros the bridge.

cheers
J

That's a good plan Justin but it would be better if there were dancing girls in there somewhere.
I have yet to catch Bongaree in a westerly. This could be a life changing experience.

(an historical aside) Did you know that Bongaree was a shipmate of Matthew Flinders.

i hope it comes to fruition dave. it's about time maybe the dolphins that we see every year we go there will be there again also.

even though the last few meets there have seen light winds i still have good memories. watching people beach start off the 30' deep shelf at the edge of the passage is up there. the water there is the coldest i've felt anywhere as well.

i'm looking forward to returning. i sailed there every weekend as a youngster. it could be a wild place and very rewarding.

pebble beach was also a fav spot. dead flat for a couple of kilometers in the right wind. learnt the art of the fall off gybe there in the shallow safe waters.

i always new bongaree was an aboriginal name but didn't know the connection. probably learnt it in school doing local history. the brains a bit softer these days. i do remember the whole area having large significance to the aboriginal community. Caboolture is aboriginal for carpet snake. there are also local spirtual locations (bora rings) i have visited in the past around the glass house mountains.

another fun day with the wanderers,

wind was solid 15 knots up till around 12.30 when it switched off.

next year we will be making the bribie meet a dawn raid finishing with the bbq.

was a small crew but we shared food and beers and enjoyed the day.

big thanks to pete at caloundra wind and surf for sponsoring the meet.

next stop either wello or kirra depending on wind.

cheers
