Hi, I am staying for several months in Atherton, Queensland. I was wondering how is windsurfing in Cairns or nearby. Are there many spots? Is it good this time of the year? Depending on your answers I will go to Cairns and try get some windsurfing, since a week ago I was windsurfing near Barcelona. Thanks!

Welcome Pau,

Unfortunately the wind will start to drop off now coming into our off season. From November to May is the stinger season, no problem as we just wear stinger suits. Don't worry you'll get a sail but it's a lottery from now.

What type of sailing are you after & what type gear do you have ?
I sail at Yorkey's 90% of the time, and Green Island from time to time. The wind can be hit and miss on the coast but Green is fairly reliable with the only downside is the $48 cost to get there, but I think well worth it if it's blowing. Pt Douglas is another option, another nice spot. The coastal water is generally rough & choppy but Green is nice and clear.

Near you is Tinaroo Dam where a bunch sail from near the sailing club, they're a friendly lot but you'll need floaty gear.

Search the photo section for my name and you'll get an idea of where we sail.

Send me a message if you want my email or phone number, I'll help where I can.

Cheers,
Bob.
