I am about to have 6 weeks of work in Brisbane and I am a wavesailor from South Australia. Keen to know if it is worth bringing up my gear. Is it windy up there this time of year - and are there any decent wave spots near Brisbane?

In SA I am happy to drive for up to 4 hours each way for a couple of hours of looping and lip smaking. Are there any good spots near Brisbane for that?

Us South Aussies never hear much about Queensland and tend to go West during summer, and our wave sailing season usually starts this time of year. We have been getting a mast high plus day almost every week through winter this year already though...

To be honest, wavesailing in SE Qld doesn't really start until September.
Before then wind is generally too offshore.
Windwise, we have nothing on what you guys get in SA or WA and could generally be considered 'fickle'.
My waveboards just keep getting bigger to get more time out on the water.
Saying that however there are some quality wave spots that work sometimes.
Flatrock and Currumbin are two of them about 1-2hrs south from Brisbane.
I remember one year where I spent a month in Maui and 2 months in WA and the best session I had that year was the day I arrived back and got a good day at Currumbin and Flatrock.
There are some spots north of Brisbane but generally wave size not as big as heading south.

Do you have a surfboard?? There has been heaps of surf this winter.

Good luck

Thanks for the quick response mahi. Unfortunately I don't surf. I do have a 93 twin that I use with a Gaastra Manic 5.7 on lighter days (less than 20 knots). I don't mind a bit of a glug when I need to, although based on your reply I hope my work trip is delayed by a month!

93 twin and 5.7 is perfect
May get a north westerly in August (prob 15 knots - port tack with head high waves)
Just dont hold me to it.
Add Kirra to the list of spots.

I think some guys sailed a NW a couple weeks or so ago at Currumbin or Kirra??
I dont know how good it was

which Mitton is this?

I moved to the Sunnie Coast from SA 2 years ago and the wind here is light. It doesnt have the same weight as it does in SA.

I went out and brought a long board the other day.

This is the mitton. Sounds like it is not so good up there. If I bring some gear, I'll just bring the light wind stuff.

Yep bring the light wind wave sailing gear, you never know what might eventuate.

Might be a good chance to have a go at learning to surf, or SUP...
