yeah it was switch! one of the best bump and jump days for a while, when the wind switch southerly the swell near the mangroves was at a great angle.
yeah i saw you blasting back and forth. ![]()
was that your dad on the simmer sail? he looked to be having a lot of fun too! ![]()
Do you guys think it will go off again tomorrow? Is it any good with east in it or were you lucky to get that southerly?
Dreaming of some flat water over here.
Edit - Man, this forcecast is a tough one:
"Sunday: Winds: SE/NE 20/25 knots, reaching 25/30 knots at times. Seas: to 1.5 metres. Rain periods and isolated thunderstorms."
may be there tomorrow
windguru says same chance of rain as today, minimal
mon and tues not looking so good for rain
^ hey ian,
from my point of view, today is pretty much as good as it gets for VP. other than when it's blowing 40 knots.
it is best in a southerly.
i've also had some great sessions in ESE and E. everything works the other way, you sail out towards redland bay and the jumps are port tack but again you're heading into the swell.
i haven't compared them but wello may have the edge for wind consistency in an E or ESE. have had some good sessions at wello in that wind direction on the eastern side of the snadbank at high tide. it's a bit flat though.
anything further north than E and it's starting to get into wind shadow territory at VP. on big kit that's no probs though. dredge out to the wind line and go but i'd say wello in an easterly is better.
vp for me tomorrow most likely.
What do you think the best time to get there would be given the tide? Or, how many sail-able hours either side of the high?
^^ good tides ian, you could sail from 11-3 without any issues. ![]()
^ may be an oldish sail swtich but your dad was flying and getting some great airtime. ![]()
ouch! hope he is ok to drive tomorrow ![]()
i was out on a 6.4 at first and getting soo overpowered. changed down to a 5.8 and felt much more in control.
the list of broken gear this last week or so is growing at VP.
3 booms,
1 mast,
1 sail,
1 fin,
all we need is a broken board and that's a whole setup!
OK VP is out for me. Been socked in by rain here (can't load the car), got jobs to do and am missing the tide. Going to head up to Redcliffe instead after the tide's started going out.
Make that 3 damaged sails at VP in the last week. I found a tear in my KA Concept 6.6 just above the downhaul area when I was derigging after a session. May be too much downhaul pressure did it, as the sail was really twitchy for a while and I couldn't get any power in it, so I later let off some downhaul and outhaul and it felt a lot better. Could excessive downhaul have caused the tear you think? I'm finding it difficult to get the right downhaul setting on this sail, says its 467 on the luff, but with my 460 mast my extension settings only fall at 465 or 469cm?? Any views welcome thanks.
i don't think excessive downhaul could cause a tear on the koncepts. unless you uised a winch i guess and went way beyond it's specified amount. not sure what may have done it. is it a second hand sail? what year?
for rigging i agree that too much downhaul will make them twitchy and gutless. that is the trend with most of their sails since 2010 or abouts and onwards.
my 2011 kults and kaos are the same. now that i've used them a few times and experimented i have found that over downhaul kills the power. if i let it off a little it's a different sail with lots of drive and way more stability.
also the numbers on the sails are approx settings. i'm finding with my 2011 kults and kaos the numbers are max settings, as i haven't needed to go beyond the figures listed to date.
also, it's probably worth measuring your extension. all extensions are different and that can make it confusing. recently i sold my 6.4m 2008 kult. it requires a 40cm extension with a 430 mast. the guy who bought it only had 36cm of extension. which was a bummer as that meant he wouldn't have bothered with the purchase.
we rigged it anyways to see what would happen and found it perfect. clearly a big difference between his extension and mine.
It's a 2nd hander I bought on Seabreeze in WA about 6 moths ago. Vintage pre 2010, probably 2008-2009 ?? I don't use a downhaul winch but a home made job metal tube with a cleat mechanism affixed to it that works really well that a guy at The Train showed me he uses. Can get some good leverage on it, obviously may be too much!
OK, question : when measuring mast extension settings, do you measure from the end of the mast (when it's sitting in the mast extension cuff) to where the metal stem of the extension first meets its black plastic base, or should I be measuring the extra 7cm I need in extension a little further down to the top of the rollers on the extension? (with the sail downhaul roller just off touching the extension roller). Derr, I should know this by now!
Cheers.
i usually just confirm the length of the extension from the collar to the top of the pulleys. that's close enough to get you in the ball park.
important thing is to set the sail visually then adjust after a run if you need. i haven't had a lot of experience with the recent koncepts but usually downhaul until the top panel goes loose in light winds and the top 2 panels in heavy winds. set the outhaul between zero & +1cm.
you can tell when it's under downhauled as the cams will stick during rotation. on the water the sail should feel very light and balanced when rigged correctly. if it feels heavy try a little more downhaul. if it feels back hand loaded try more outhaul if it feels twitchy and gutless you've over done the downhaul and outhaul.
it should not look like a neilpryde sail when rigged correctly. if the head is very very loose then it's way overdone.
that is all based on having the correct mast of course.
the way i rig the koncept is i set the extension and boom to achive the dims written on the sail. then i downhaul until the head just starts to go loose down to the second batten then let off about 1cm if lighter winds or keep it there for stronger winds.
same really with outhaul. i set it with a little positive outhaul. only a touch really, then if the sail is loading up my backhand i increase by 1cm, if i want a little more drive off the wind i let it off 1cm.
ultimately they are easy sails to rig compared to some sails. if you want i can meet you at VP and go through the rigging. also check out the KA forum for rigging tips and or questions. there you can talk with the testers that know the koncept inside out. http://www.kasail.com/windsurfing/forum/
here's a photo of the koncept on the water. see how the top 2 panels are loose. that's what you are going for.
Thanks, all good advise. I reckon I'm generally going over the top with both my downhaul and outhaul as the sail's feeling really twitchy and over light and only powers up when I can get the perfect angle to the breeze, not to mention the leech was really loose.
Cheers.
