Hello windsurfing guys and girls in australia!

My name is Joost, 26 years old from the Netherlands and I am planning a trip to your beautiful country. The idea so far is to go to Cairns at the end of september, buy a campervan and do a lot of surfing and windsurfing while travelling and playing the tourist on my way to Sydney from where i fly back home just before christmas.

I have heard a lot about windsurfing on the westcoast, but not so much of the eastcoast. I was hoping to learn more about from you all.
Some questions that already went through my head are :
*How much possibilities are there to windsurf? How many spots at sea/lakes, windstrength and direction, what size waves etc.
*Is it etter to rent equipment, or is it worth of bringing it from home?
*What about the risks? Like stingers, sharks, current, crocodiles, riffs etcetera
*How big is the windsurfscene? How crowded are spots with windsurfers, kiters and surfers and are non-locals tolerated?

I would be very thankful if you could help me on my way and maybe have some useful tips or recommendations!

Hi Joots , welcome please see helpfull tips below!

Flatwater more than waves for Queensland, everything from big gear to medium wave gear and lots of no wind period in between the seldom windy periods.
*Is it etter to rent equipment, or is it worth of bringing it from home?
Purchase some good gear then sell it before you leave, if its really good and really cheap sell it to me! I'll let you know what I like!
*What about the risks? Like stingers, sharks, current, crocodiles, riffs etcetera
the crocodiles eat the sharks after they have been killed by the deadly stingers so dont worry about the sharks, the crocodiles get shot by physco's in landcruiser utes with bull horns and bundy rum stickers, so you dont need to worry about them either, but you may need to worry about the savage tropical puffer fish that will rip your big toe off when you tread into the shallows, and of course thats ensuring you didnt stand on a stone fish that can kill or at least leave you in a wheel chair or crutches for 6 months..make sure you dont leave food near your van as the dingoes will attack you when you get back to the van...oh and the deadly stingers dont worry about them cause you cant even see them! No riffs to worry about expect between Eddie McGuire and Mick Malthouse but thats a different story...
*How big is the windsurfscene? How crowded are spots with windsurfers, kiters and surfers and are non-locals tolerated?
We are a very tolerable society, all are welcome and plenty of space for everyone, over crowding is not an issue, as soon as a place gets too busy the drop bears come out of the gum trees and kulll the excess numbers.

I would be very thankful if you could help me on my way and maybe have some useful tips or recommendations!
Wear lots of sunscreen, drink lots, and wear protection at night if you get lucky...ohh and be kind to your mother..

hope this was helpfull!! enjoy your trip!

Joots end of September our season is winding up in Cairns, that's not to say if won't be windy just not guaranteed. Do yourself a favour and go to Green Island, you can hire gear there. Do a search here re GI, plenty of info.

Cheers Bob.
