On the revisiting once popular spots..snuck a great quick session in at Mudjimba today, low tide, 12-15knts small swell, 7.4 109ltr.
Have wave sailed & kited this place in the past but in reality not much wave sailing more blasting, this time on 'free ride slalom gear' it rocked! Challenging nice swells to sail, super quick runs, but awfully choppy near the island and wind effected, but great free blasting, would not recommend a race sail or too flat a board or big fin.
Ended up on the last run for the day me having the wipe out of all wipe outs, no idea what happened but a fast gybe down the face of swell went horribly wrong, what I thought was the worst corky ever on my calf turned out to be deep gash in my calf that required 6 stiches, bordering on sunset bleeding from my leg whilst water starting near Old woman island, not a good feeling! So now I have one leg twice the size of the other!
Check it out next S-SE blow if you want more of a challenge than the lakes or golden pond.
If the swell is small then this place works for some fun challenging slalom/
freeride runs, or if its up offers wave sail options, although shallow breaking so quite gear hungry! , Disclaimer..NOT A SPOT FOR BEGINNERS
nice wrap JS,
i've been out around old woman on a longboard before. very nice spot. crystal clear water over the reef.
your post got me wondering if you've ever sailed mooloolaba in a SE wind. haven't myself. massive wind shadow.
but old mate on the sunny coast apparently did at some point and scored a couple hundred meters of down the line.
this has got me thinking about trying it on a sup sailboard where i will actually float.
r u talking about mudjimba or old woman.
they are both reefs but mudjimba is more coffee rock where as old woman is proper reef. it was the northern side i was at though both ends can be surfed.
as jonsey said the winds pretty flukey. waves are hollow peelers, seriously sharky spot. would depend on swell direction as to where to go.
it's out a fair way. i sailed there from mooloolaba.
I think Mools in a SE i think will go off on a SUP sail, yes the wind shadow is to crap to sail it normally , but with the SUP you can float out to the break could be great, would be a battle with the surfers though, they are 'dredging' the river mouth again at the moment so no doubt that will chnage the set up some.
You could add Alex Head to that SUP Sail List also, and Coolum Beach (which is the best wavesail spot on the Sunny Coast by far)
Old woman island On Tuesday had amazing waves peeling off it that would have been perfect Cross Off for waves sailing, the issue though is the wind and water around the island all goes pear shaped, bit dodgy, and its also sharky.
At Mudjimba there is a lot of coffee rock just south of the surf beach steps - be careful at high tide of hitting the rock when you come in or stepping off your board. Old Woman Island has a reef of large boulders that extend quite a way west of the island - again be careful of the bottom. I have sailed Mooloolaba in a SE & it is great especially in a big swell. Once clear of the river mouth you can sail in clear breeze as far out as you are game. On slalom gear it is not too hard to sail back up wind to return to the beach. On wave gear you usually have to return further down and sail in through the shore break and then walk back to your starting spot. When the shore break is not too bad you can sail out from Loo with a View. Most locals go to Neil Street (near Dicky Beach, Caloundra) in a SE wind. It's all nice sailing.
hi adrian,
what's it like at the loo with a view? i've never even thought to launch there, can you wave sail that spot? used to go there to boogieboard regularly pre family
Hi, a few years ago I used to go out there quite often in SE / S winds - parking is the biggest problem, but not to bad during the week. When the shore break is small it is easy to get out & I usually used my slalom / freeride gear. I would sail out a mile or two & it gets really nice past the point. Last year I had maybe my best wave sail there too. I actually went out from the Spit because the surf was big & shore break rather ugly. Great waves going right past the bar & I could ride them most of the way into shore. I couldn't sail back upwind on my wave board because as I approached the Spit there was no wind. I ended up just sailing in to the surf beach & walking back. It was a nice sail & no one there of course!
Undoubtedly the best wave spot on the sunny coast. All the planets aligned yesterday 6/03/2012 and it looked fantastic. ENE swell, SSE breeze......BINGO!
Unfortunately I have stuffed my shoulder so didn't get amoungst it. Patiently waiting for next time ![]()
