So after last months W/SW Mooloolaba adventure (plus safer alternatives), heres part 2.
Hopefully the picture loads...
Basically Noojar Road Twin Waters, a nice long blast across one of the wider spots of the maroochy river, back almost to Picnic point on the Maroochy side, in SE/E and I'm sure opposite tack W, Have been considering this run for over a year, again cant believe I have never sailed it.
The pic highlights the Sandbars, I SUP along here often so was only too aware how shallow it is...the key here you have around 1.30 - 2 hrs either side of high tide, depends on your fin depth, the arrows (if I had a GPS) would have been pretty much my run, you start just down wind of the boat launch.
Awesome long runs yesterday (in my lunch break!) on the Maroochy side it really bulletted through and offered some super windy and smooth jobe spots, twin waters offered more chop, and windy to really windy gusts on the run, generally flat water all the way, awesome...
The wind doesnt really make it to Shore on the Maroochy side, you would have to bog/swim out 50m or so. It was nice and sunny whilst I sailed so I could keep an eye on the sand bars, High yesterday was around 12.30 so thats what I based my sailable times on, obviously a wave board fin the window is a lot wider, if you have one of skifs (whoops I mean formula boards) forget it too shallow. tide current didnt seem to make an impact on any thing (unlike when I SUP against it!)
Now All I need to do now is get council to pump out a bit of sand and its an all day great sail spot...otherwise needs to stick to around high tide only, saves a drive to Caloundra or Weyba!
Ohh and there is a bit of native grass to rig up on at Noojar
Great pic, I sailed this very run once last year after parking at the end of Nojar Rd. Like you say would be perfect if not for the sandbars restricting sailing to high tide.
I'd like to try sailing on the east side of the Maroochy bridge in the old water-ski area as a bit deeper and wider, but I'm not sure how the wind blows there..
yep that would work also, especially in the Westerly's as more 'funneled' but a shorter run and the Nth Shore is mangroves. so bugger if you want some land there to pull up on..
I also was on the Noosa River last big westerley we had (on a boat!) and also works well (as well as West can be).
I keep dreaming of a non silted up maroochy river mouth area, just in from the mouth is an amzing section of water for all sorts of water sports, but just to full of sand.. is ok for kiting but thats its, I belive in yester years that it wasnt always full of sand and was an amazing big patch of blue...
Noojar road, is the go, just got to work with the tide, makes for a 3+Hr session which is pretty good
Whats it like in a NE in the chanel closet to Maroochy ? I've seen sailors there but never tried it myself.
