wow I got an amazing sail in today on the westerly straight nrth south along the flat bank of main chanel - v gusty but fast as - awesome - I take back comments about westerlies on the gold coast brilliant!
I'm assuming that was you on the blue board. I was up near the seaway just NTH of the red dredge or whatever it is. I had just started to pack up when i saw you doing your runs up to the seaway. Very gusty at times. First i was thinking i need a bigger sail then i was getting hit with bullets that made me think i was over rigged at times but it was still good. Where did you rig up and launch from because the spit is really good for clean water and sand bottom but EVERYTHING gets covered in sand when packing up. Man i wish there was some decent grass at the spit. When the wind fills in i recon it's as good as Wello which seems to be gusty a lot of the time anyway but not so tide dependent and MUCH cleaner. And closer which means more likely to actually persevere sailing in a W more often.
You can rig anywhere along there but if your really worried about the sand and i am not go to the seaworld car park get to the back of the carpark (Southport end) and theres a big grass area there, just work your way up along the sand banks.
Westerlys anything from 4m to 7m sails in 30seconds, we have all been there!
Looking good after today for southerlies
yep that was me - it was so good - and the water was amazing beautiful clear blue green - I had the blue board out (148l) in case I had to sludge though lulls - 7.4m of sail - but was overpowered most of the time - when you get going fast on very flat water like that, you can hold down & control a lot more sail and you can punch through the gusts - I launched at the boatramp next to seaworld nara - I am not so sure about along at seaworld any more - there are a number of new highrises on the north side of southport. No grass - just sand - there was a tap though. After yesterday though I am definitely looking out for westerlies!
It's not that i'm worried about the sand so much. I don't mind rigging up in it and love the sandy bottom and beaches in relation to the mud at Wello on a low just hate when everything is wet and the sand sticks to it then you've got to put it all back in your car. Everything packs up much cleaner at Shearwater.
hitch you looked like you were were having an awesome time getting along pretty well. I watched from the spit a little after i packed up then went to the boat ramp behind nara then seaworld carpark to see if i could work out where you rigged. I used to launch my cat from that boat ramp but thought it would be a pain having to tack out all the way to the channel so that's why i have been setting up at the spit because your straight into the channel. It's not perfect due to the wind being up and down but like you say the water is beautiful there, a perfect aqua colour. It wasn't even that cold either. I've had a couple of good sails there in magic conditions water wise you just have to put up with bullets from time to time, like every 10 seconds
