It is my absolute pleasure to announce that the Queensland Freewave Association is now fully up and incorporated, and we have now been affiliated with WQ and so can start taking memberships and running events! A big thanks to Scot Farley and Tony Matta over at WQ for their support and assistance.
QLD Freewave Assocation aims to promote wavesailing and freestyle in QLD, and will aim to cater for those who wish to improve their skills in these disciplines as well as providing a platform for official competitions, clinics, national and international trips and social gatherings of course.
We are kicking off our competitions with a bang with the Australian Wavesailing Nationals in Woolgoolga NSW from the 29th Sept to 6 Oct and will be able to sign up members for the event so they are covered by the public liability insurance for the event if they are not yet a member of an affiliated club.
Annual membership will be $75, which will include the following:
- insurance coverage for any event run by QLD Freewave Association or any WQ affiliated club
- a QLDFWA t-shirt
- a QLDFWA sail sticker
- access to an official AUS sail no. (to be organised via AWA)
- exclusive direct invitation to all clinics, events and social gatherings run by QLDFWA.
Please contact me on will@josephmark.com.au if you wish to become an annual member and I will send you a signup form and details for member ship payment.
The NSWWA run a summer series of 5 events, and it is our aim to emulate this here in QLD with a QLD Freewave Series across the season at locations across QLD.
We are all very excited about the formation of this club, as wavesailors and those venturing into the freestyle discipline have lacked an avenue such as this since the days of SEQ Wavesailing Club.
Please get onboard and support the club by becoming a member, which will allow us to promote the club, organise events and clinics and hopefully get sponsors on board for the 2012-2013 season.
Thanks and Welcome!
Will Johnston
President
QLD Freewave Association Inc.
Really well said Will and great to see a new club coming on board and catering for the wave sailors and freestyles. As an organizer it is very satisfying to see new people getting behind the sport and volunteering their time, resources and energy to help make it better for us all as individual windsurfers.
I really want to reinforce the need to get behind the clubs and support them by becoming a member. It really is the only way to ensure they stand the test of time. It was a real shame when SEQ fell away and we need to make sure this does not happen again. I know you wave sailors are less inclined to sign up with a club but it is such a small fee that even if you only made one event it would be well worth it.
Welcome aboard Will and Co, we are really happy to have you as one of the affiliated clubs and wish you all the best for the coming season.
Best Regards (Scot Farley - President Windsurfing Queensland)
Hey Will, where do you think you will run the Qld events when they happen and do you think you will combine with the NSW sailors to increase numbers?
Scot - thanks for the queries!
We have listed the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Moreton Bay and some possible locations in Northern NSW to allow us to be covered to hold events in these spots, so depending on the concouncil approvals, then we hopefully should be able to run events at Niel St, Castaways (Perigian), Mudjimba, Beachmere, Bribie, any other locations on the bay, as well as spots on the gold coast like shearwater, the train, Narrowneck, Currumbin etc.
Of course these spots will depend on council and marine authority approvals but the aim is to hold events at locations give a lot of variety in the conditions. Also if certain conditions are prevelent (such as NE seabreeze season :)) then we would try and get the event to be somewhere that works best in those conditions.
As for combining with NSW, this is definately on the cards, and there has been even an idea of holding a State of Origin event - which could be an awesome concept and included other clubs such as Bayside if there was racing as well. lots of potential - its looking very exciting!
To all the people who have contacted me in regards to signing up - awesome! A signup form and more info will be coming to you shortly - thanks for the support so far and be sure to spread the word!
That all sounds fantastic, I like the idea of the state of origin wavesailing comp. We would surely wipe the floor with those southerners.
I hope there's a State of Origin cause I so want to smash those dirty, filthy cockroaches.
