Heres a couple of pics I took from Wello today.

Question for the regulars down there. I seen a very close near miss with a Kite surfer slamming his kite into the water and nearly taking out two young girls. Missed them by atleast a couple of meters. I thought Wello was a NO Kite Surfing area?? I seen a couple of guys doing the right thing and launching away from swimmers but the others I think were a little close to swimmers for comfort.

As far as I'm aware and don't quote me. But council have no jurisdiction over anything below the hide tide mark. So as long as they are not setting up above this mark they are not doing anything wrong..

Hi DeeJay8204

Great Pics I was there this afternoon and even though I am learning had a blast. Looks like you covered a lot - its really good to see so many people enjoying mother natures playground.

Do you mind if I copy the one that I am in?

Cheers

This is true but you need to carry ya gear down to the water.

It was the guy with the Red and Grey sail I seen. Then another kite surfer getting a bystander to help launch nearly take someone on the beach out with their sail.

And my question was more about the signs as you drive into the reserve stating strictly no Kitesurfing in this reserve. What is actually classified as the reserve there?

its like superpoop said its the high tide mark . I see them going close to the swimmers all the time trying to impress the kids and realistically only 2 or 3 of the kiters there actually appear to be in control of whats going on most of them are just getting dragged along. A few times ive had kites crash to close to me me when ive been sitting in the water, they need some common sence when i sail i dont leave a distance between me and any one else that if i stuff up or something goes wrong i cant hit them , not many kiters have that logic .

Does rigging up on a high tide on the beach, then launching the kite within spitting distance of other people count?

Then crashing the sail into a crowded area of the beach and nearly taking out two kids count? I dont have an issue with them boarding there but, common sense isn't that hard.

Congrats to the guys that were doing the right thing, one in particular that told another kite surfer not to launch himself and wait till someone experienced came off the water to help. That person that he told was the one that got an inexperienced spectator who couldn't fly a kids kite (literally, i was laughing at him) to launch for him, which in turn nearly took out a lady standing on the grass.

When I see stupid things like this happen is when I think it should be banned in public populated areas.

most of the local guys are pretty good but there's been some newbies of late around with the holidays.

Yep understandable, But all it takes is someone to explain the local rules to them. I'm not a local but the first thing I do is look around and see what could happen if something does happen.

Had one do a boost turn thing in front of me today without looking first. I think he realised real quick and gestured his hand at me to imply he was sorry. What I don't understand is how these guys never look before turning. I always try do my best to see who's around and pick a spot but there is too many kite's that don't look. I'm not kite bashing either but some guys don't show any common sense or respect for others on the water.

They should also not be within a distance where part of their equipment can come into contact with swimmers. Not sure how they can do this at Wellington Point however as Swimmers, Windsurfers and Kitesurfers all share the same spot.

For any kitersurfers reading this I hope you can take constructive criticism and please allow yourself enough room and be mindful of others around you.

PS I hope the guy on the windsurfer that his the bank at speed in front of me today didn't do too much damage.

Cheers

One of the local cops told me the reason they got banned was due to a few incidents of getting air and landing on or near the cars.... Hmm if they can't miss a car how are they gonna miss swimmers lol

Yep I also seen a left over kite in a tree off Wello while I was there yesterday. I'm not kite bashing either, I can't wait to give it a try one day. Just trying to figure out what these guys are thinking launching and setting up in a populated area. All it would take is one of those kites to slam into a child in the water and kill them to shut down the area completely to both windsurfers and kiters.

That was me. I thought it was deep enough. Did some damage to my left calf muscle , but got off lightly.
Things come in threes.
Kiter boosts over my head whilst standing near the shore and just misses me by Inches. No apology offered.
Hit the bank at speed, ouch
Break a mast and nearly drown.

I just posted in your other thread about it as I was following you (going down the bank though) when I heard someone come to an abrupt halt. I couldn't quite tell who it was but thought I saw the green of your board. It sounded nasty as your sail hit hard. I can't help think this was the beginning of the end for your mast as it probably fractured from going round the front impact then failed completely later when under stress.

Sorry to hear this happen and good to meet you earlier in the day. At least you are safe and look forward to seeing your new buoyancy device.

That was a different mast to one which broke. Looks like I might have another one to worry about . Buoyancy device is purchased and ready to go.
