Hey just wondering if many people windsurf at illawong beach in mackay? Thinking about getting some gear (gotta sell my yak 1st) and wanted to know if there was a group that sailed regularly? Just before cyclone ului i noticed there were a heap of people out sailing!

Gday Inyaface,
yep there's a number of regulars go out there usually SEly over 15knots a couple of hours either side of high tide is best, otherwise East Point, Shoal Point, blacks beach, Sarina beach and Salonika have some sailing. I like strong NE-Ely at Kinchant dam too.
What sort of board are you looking for?

Sounds like your on your way, best bet is to let Simon at board crazy advise you of whats a good board for your level, my main board I use here is a fanatic hawk which copes well with the chop we get but is still quite lively.

where'd be the ideal spot for a learner to try out his kit? I was thinking kinchant but also probably illawong on a calmer day? 10-15?

Hey windy, Kinchant is a great learner spot but is best in E-NE ly winds as the SEwinds come over some hills and get bullety near the launch area. I might go out there Wednesday arvo or from Illawong around high tide, I'm off work for a week from Wednesday so will be looking for a sail when there's wind. Send me a pm if your planning on getting out and about. Another good learner spot is Grasstree Beach as its horseshoe shape gives one corner a nice flat section to get going.
