There's been two box jellyfish sighted at the wynum manly yacht club, that's not goodhttp://www.wmyc.com.au/index.php?mact=News,cntnt01,detail,0&cntnt01articleid=17&cntnt01returnid=15
First irukandji at fraser island and now box jellies at manly. This sucks!!!!
Gonna have to get a wetsuit now ![]()
RQYS issued a jellyfish warning for Morbakka "fire jelly" "moreton bay stinger" as a couple have been seen in the harbour recently.
These are apparently a "giant" version of the Irukandji jellyfish. Sounds scary but they are luckily not as deadly. I was speaking to Lisa Gershwin today and she said if you see one (they are quite big) stay away from them because they will still make you very sick.

I was out there for 3 hours on Tuesday and the only danger I had was the fisherman off the rocks snagged me twice boo.But not good bout these jellies thats for sure makes me want a bigger board to stay high and dry.
Some identification and treatment advise here:

Worth packing vinegar in the sailing gear.
Bout 17 years ago I was stung at Manly, it would've been about around this time of year that it happened as was wearing wetsuit, as arm dipped into water I got stung underneath. Thankfully i had vinegar on hand & washed sting with that. It wasn't the most painful sting i've had (bullrout takes that) but it bloody hurt alot and all day. Being young and stupid I kept on sailing as I figured may as well enjoy yourself, no point sitting round home feeling sorry for yourself. After about an hour I had to stop sailing, was weak & pain had spread.
Went home took some pain killers & went to bed then didn't wake up for 2 days! Did not stir nothing, woke up what I figured was later that day thinking that was a good sleep.
I was later advised it was a box jellyfish sting & I lived with the scar for a long time (10 years?). I didn't believe it could be a box jellyfish (not here), that irukanji thing would make sense.
Long story short if you get stung, apply vinegar & then go straight to hospital. Vinegar just stops the nematocysts from firing but the venom is already in your system.
There morbakkas or "fire jelly""moreton bay stinger", related to the irakundji, the can cause mild irakundjii syndrome and there stings burn. there not new to waterloo bay.
