I wonder how you people carry your windsurfing gear like board, mast, boom,etc with your car. I am looking for a car and I am a first car buyer.
Do you suggest me buying a hatchback or sedan? do you put all the stuff on the roofrack? And approximately how much to 'install' a roofrack?

I own a small hatchback. All the stuff in the back and the board on the roof.
Ive seen guys with vans and their gear fits perfectly! 
I have a Nissan Pathfiner, before that a Falcon Wagon, before that a Magna Wagon. I beleive that putting all your gear inside helps protect it, you don't have to worry re boards coming off the roof, protection from crooks, etc etc.
But that's just my humble opinion.
Also my Mrs has a Corolla Hatchback, and I can fit everything inside that.

I use a '99 Hyundai Excel, It's amazing how much you can fit in this car, with all the seats down can fit 2 boards, 5 sails, 2 booms, 3 masts etc.
Runs on the smell of an oily rag and they are pretty cheap cars.
Roof racks are pretty expensive for them (approx $300), but have been using soft racks successfully to carry one board.
I have an old Mazda 121 Hatchback and can fit everything (2 masts, boom, 2 boards (the longest being 252 cms) and 3 sails all in the car itself. If you have a passenger though roof racks woud help but aren't essential.
id buy a ute . Ive found mine really usefull any time i need to i can just throw stuff it the back .
Volvo 960 wagon, one of the last of the "shoebox" shape. Nothing can touch it for cargo space other than a van (and maybe the older falcon wagons). All the gear goes in the car, giant formula sails, 3m long mast bags and all. Board goes on roofracks with the old fashioned external gutter clamps, so you can get super strong tradies racks without paying an arm and a leg. And as a bonus, the rustproofing on these things is brilliant.
Oh, and if you're a first car buyer 'cause you're a youngster - your parents will get that warm glow of false security with you driving a Volvo :)
