May be heading to the Bay for work, what are my sailing options? Was there on Sunday and wind seemed to have a bit of south in it but I saw potential for freestyle off either Point Vernon or Urangan (bit more chop). Is the Urangan area subject to strong tidal currents that rule out sailing? Burrum Heads looked no good, I've seen the pics but how consistent is it? I have a 107 litre JP freestyle and bigest sail is a 6.2m. Is there any hope, or should I just give it away? If I was to sail off Point Vernon or Urangan what are the chances of being eaten?
You're in luck. Darryl Jones has been requesting all sorts of new locations in the region, so there is a handy map at ka72.com.
These are spots around Hervey Bay where GPS tracks have been submitted to ka72.com from. Most of these are windsurfing.http://www.ka72.com/LocationMap.aspx?suggid=107
In addition to these spots, look at Burrum Heads.
Cheers,
Dylan.
You're in luck the whale spat me out!!
Bring your gear there are some great spots
around Hervey Bay for all sorts of sailing.
Regular group of sailors out daily if conditions
are ok.
Cheers guys. So for a 107ltr freestyle board, what sail sizes would be best suited?
would 6-6.5 be most common?

Depends on your weight and the wind. My guess unless it is belting at 20 knots and you are less the 75kg you will need the 6.5 (or bigger). We are in the quiet season but i have been up there this time of year & it has been very good sailing (but it can be a bit on/off).
When are you going up there?
Yeah like Jeff said depends how much of a lump you are,
most of us here have built in weight vests and are usually
on 8m+ except for Jeff.
I'm a lump! Usually don't bother unless it's 18 knots. Have sailed a bit at Golden Beach with the speed demons and generally got going alright with a 6.2m when they have their spinikers up :)
Thanks for the info!
