Just wanted to send out a big thanks to everyone at Elliott Heads. We have just spent 3 weeks in paradise - Windsurfing (me), Kiting (my 12 year old), SUP'ing (the whole family of five) and simply having fun! Hence the nic - FUN45!

We'll look forward to seeing you all again in a year! It is paradise!

Am way jealous fun45. Great spot for the family and water sports, windsurfing especially. Did you get good wind and waves through Christmas and was it overly busy through that period?

Of the three weeks we were there we sailed more than half the days and even took a day trip up north to a 4x4 only location where there were perfect waves. Toward the end of the 3 weeks it was pretty much sailing everyday. I was spent by the end of it!

The beauty of Elliott Heads is the diversity of options depending on the tide and wind direction. From swell and small waves to flat water, and even a knee deep lagoon on high high tides that gives you a spot for learning!

As you can see from the image there is a small sand island in the middle, which when the wind is in the right direction, creates a section in the channel at mid to low tide that is like glass. So you can really get some speed up and then just past that, hit the chop.

If there is wind there are always kiters or windsurfers there and on the really busy days there are so many options to choose from you don't get in each others way. Plus - no boats to dodge!! Only about 2-3 days where there were plenty of people swimming but thanks to the current we don't get in each others way as they stay shallow.

To top it off the Windsurfing and Kitesurfing community up there are a great bunch! We have been going there for the past 3 years for a holiday and this was by far the best one yet! We've pre-booked for the next 2 years..

Best Windsurfing destination in QLD, by Far! Flat water, bump and jump , decent size waves on big day, as safe as you could ever get, and in SE winds its always +5knots windier at EH than any where else.
Only thing it really needs is decent cafe with good coffee!, apart from that its paradise!

Mouth of the Kolan River. 4x4 only because to get to the spot you need to drive from the north along the beach for quite a way and cross a creek! All subject to tide so you can comfortably run an 1 hour or so either side of the low! Have a look at it on Google Maps and you will see why it creates the waves with the right conditions. It is not easily accessed so recommend for safety you only go up in a group! On the day there were 3 of us with 4x4's and probably about 7 guys. A few were dragged downwind for a k or 2 and needed a lift back to the launch spot.

My son is new to Kiting and had a blast in the shallow channel area just getting practise! He will be ready for the waves when we go back at the end of this year!

just looking on google earth - can you rig in the caravan park or do you have to drive down by the river?

Cruiser you could rig in the caravan park but at least 300 meter walk over rough bitumen roadway and gravel on the sides.
We checked it all out in Dec
Also bigger van sites are at the back of the park making the walk a fair bit longer.
We wrote down all the best sites on a map.

I agree Fun45, Elliot Heads is one of the best spots and the locals are friendly. The sand is similar to the Goldy so you can see where the sand bars are when the water is a little deep. Was pi$$ing down when I was there and over 30 knots but could still see the sand! Awesome when the tide comes in and there are small waves to play on. The fish & chip shop make's the best hamburgers! Easy walk from the caravan park to the sailing spot.

Low tide not suitable for windsurfers unless you go over the otherside in the channel near Coonah Beach or out in the open ocean.

Hi bc, camera properties say 1:32pm on 25/12/2011. I believe low tide that day was about 3 - 4ish? .... so still enough water to sail for another hour or so (small fin).

Everytime I make the effort to travel to Elliot,(1.5hrs)I've never been disapointed, one day got to use the sup, then the wind started,7m slalom in the river, 5.3 wave sail in waves, ended up rigging down to 4.7.good crew to sail with too.

I'll tell you what guys, your making me so jealous! I'm just learning and live on the Gold Coast but i work away so am barely at home to practise. Checking out the winds for this weekend as i'll be home but doesn't look promising. Just wondering if anyone knows of a nice place to stay at Elliott Heads with my girlfriend for a few days thats close to the water? Not looking for anything flash, just something comfortable. Any advice would be appreciated.

fonz2110, if Elliot is booked out there are loads of places to stay at Bargara - just a short drive to Elliot.
