Have been chatting with Simon and there has been some discussion of running a bit of an informal gybing clinic up at the lake on the Saturday before the race. I know a few of us have been talking about this for a while, any suggestions on the best way to conduct one of these?? has anyone ever attended one??

My suggestion was to put a couple of guys who know what they are doing in an anchored boat and then we attempt to gybe around it. Feedback could then be passed on to each sailor??

The objective would be to have more racers achieving planing exit gybes and potentially less congestion at the gybe marks.

Someone taking lots of photos and say rotate a sailor per good gyber. So much of it is good entry clean entry into the gybe at the correct angle and you can't really correct that on a boat.

You could have another buoy away from the boat where people can practice what they've learnt from good gyber till their rotation comes around. I don't think much of it is something you can correct in one day, so good gybers have to pick a few points and have their sailor perfecting that.

Simon can run tuition on the beach before hand, and a debrief afterwards if necessary.

BTW nooooooooo, how am I going to catch up if everyone starts making their gybes

I know the golf guys use a video which would be ideal, not sure how doable this would be on the water. I think Simon T has been mucking around with this idea. I reckon your totally right about to much for just one day, maybe just a few quick tips. Even this would help some of us improve.

Hey Bart,
Come up here and I'll teach you in some really rough water first, then those flat water gybes will be a cinch.

Sausage I think you should get a leave pass and come down to the lake for the weekend! I'll even supply the accom.

I think it is good to follow experienced sailors into a gybe and try to mimick their path and movements. Simon is also very good at looking at what you are doing wrong when he is sailing with you and giving very useful corrective advice.

PS: I was on the muppets web site this morning and noticed that Kermit wasn't too happy. Has this got anything to with you Bart, I noticed your pants were Kermit green on the weekend.

Sounds like a good idea.

I think setting up some clinics about the place isnt a bad idea - its crazy how quickly you can improve by follwing/watching someone else who's skill level is slighly higher than yours and discussing the fine points of thier technique.

Should get a freestyle one going too! Im sure everyone would love to add a forward loop/willyskipper/vulcan etc to their sailing skills list :)

Blackattack - not sure if i have seen you about the lake - I learnt to sail up there and have going there for years. awesome place when its on!

hope to see you about sometime.

peace.

we hold clinics at the windwanderers meets. even had a vulcan and forward loop session. clinics are well worth it.

For freestyle you should get in touch with the SEQ Wave sailors. Their club is targeting the freestyle / wave sailor market and they might be interested in running such a clinic.

What bart is keen on getting better is not just the general jibe - but full on slalom carving jibe around a pin.

Hey Gesty, lets have another Vulcan clinic. Lots of people have been trying them (not me yet). Would love to get some inspiration/motivation. Maybe down the Goldy -
Instruction and video. Yep.

Bring back supercross, that's how. Then your superior waterstarting skills would come to the fore.

Supercross clinics would be good. You could have a whole series of them -
- step gybe
- duck gybe
- vulcan/spock
- speed loop
- serious chop hops over obstacles
Throw in racing technique and you have a nice suite of skills.

Why did they drop it from PWA comp?
