My son and I working on getting better at the sport - really enjoying it so far but not sure where to go in a southerly. We are keen to accelerate our skills. I live in Bayside area. Enjoy Wello with Northerly. Also need to learn about gear too.
You mean true southerly when the east side of Wello is too gusty? Thompson's Beach, Viccy Point is probably the nearest with the cleanest air.
Apart from that you could go North side: Pelican Park, Apex Park, Woody Point.
Yes go to Thompsons Beach at high tide its lovely this is where I learn't nice sand & onshore very safe in any southerly. Go when its 10 to 15kts so as its not to rough.
Thanks NotWal. Yeah we are just trying to figure it all out atm - Southerly or SE. Looks like southerlies coming up this week end and keen to get out - did consider having a look at Lake Cootharaba or Gold Coast. My wife is interested and also having a bit of a go - the easier the better I guess. We had a go at Manly side of Wello last week in a SE i think - wasn't a lot of joy there lol. Had a go anyway. Wife wasn't interested.
Just got basic gear 4.5 mt sail and 200 L mistral
Young fella has a 6m sail and 180 L Naish board

Thanks Glynn - Every time we have a look there is no water lol pick the tides - its frustrating being green lol.
Yeah VP Thompsons Beach is a good place for you. But need to look here on Seabreeze/Weather/Qld/Brisbane and get water from 1.5 metres and above. So time your visit to sail in this water height - unless you want to walk a long way out.
Cheers
Is there an equivalent goggle map for Brisbane windsurfing similar to this for the Gold Coast?
www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=11bMG-2CJzjtdRHnpQlYTlLpMIBI&msa=0&ll=-27.92071,153.440723&spn=0.112243,0.170803
Has relevant spots as dropped pins with info for each location. I found it very usefull.
How could we make one if there isn't
Cheers Jeff

Thanks for the advice Greg appreciate all the advice we can get

Hey Jeff, is it a Northerly or Southerly that is good for Sandstone Point. Either way, Oxley ave at Sandstone Point is awesome for learning at, Flat water even in strong winds only good on a high tide.

Its my goto spot for SE winds. Next friday looks good on SeaBreeze![]()
cheers Jeff
re Sandstone Point.
I have it on good authority that there are razor fish there so avoid stepping in the weeds.
But yes it's a nice spot with shallow flat water and big rolling bumps out in the channel.

Are you asking or telling? If you are telling then a) the question marks are misleading and b) so what? Are you "just sayin"?
If you are asking then, no I have had no issues with razor fish.
We go out off Oxley Ave at Sandstone Point, I usually dont have boots on as I keep forgetting to pack them. Never stood on anything yet, A lot of seaweed about 15-20mt out and some good rocks off to the right to watch out for if using large fin. But still a really good spot to sail in.
What about northside - Brighton - Redcliffe - Sandgate - Might be heading there late today after work
I've been following your posts, welcome to the sport.
One hour North from Brisbane are some realy great spots to sail, especially for beginners. Starting at Golden Beach, Caloundra going up to Lake Weyba and Lake Cootharaba. Lake Weyba is the perfect spot as it's only knee or waist deep and has no current. Lake Cootharaba is perfect for camping or stay in one of the hotels at Boreen point.
The WindWanderers is a windsurfing club at the Sunshine Coasts and they organize, among other, Windsurfing camping and free lessons on various dates and locations. The next one is on 9th of Feb at Lake Weyba. This is the link http://www.windwanderers.org.au/Calendar.aspx You and your family are very welcome to join in. We'll have 4 to 5 beginners boards on the water and plenty of experienced sailors to assist you.
Hope to see you on the water one day and happy learning ![]()
Cheers,
Peter
Southern end of Bribie Island is the best place for a true southerly but make sure it's an outgoing tide or head around to Red beach. Tide into wind makes for a great place and one of the best places to sail. As for Pebble beach I always prefed to sail over from Bribie and go upwind to where the sand banks fall away into the bay which is about level with the end of the island. These sand banks have small waves that form on them in the big blows. pebble beach is just a little too tide dependent and as for razor fish or what ever you call them I still have scars on my feet from twenty years ago sailing the area.

Hi mate, pelican park near woody point is good in a dead east wind, and is ok on all tdes.justllaunch as far east as you can (near fish shop) to avoid the groin.and watch it doesnt go NE on you in the arvo.. Good spot in Sw too.
Thank
