Hi FNQ Mob,
Is there anyone that hires (some sort of half reasonable) gear in Port Douglas? The annual pilgrimage to escape the 'scratch the ice off the windscreen' season is happening in October. Last year, I couldn't even see any windsurfers in the hire shop that does the tubes, and from what I overheard several years back, it was too windy for sailboards once it was starting to near 12 knots.
If not, I will have to give the kite thing a go..
Spending a week in Cairns and a week in PD, so will venture out to GI for a day.
Can't wait to get up there and thaw out.![]()
Just stayed a week at Port Douglas, couldn't find any windsurf hire. Looks like there is kite hire on 4 mile beach, have seen a few guys out every day. Conditions have looked great, 20-25 kts SE most days.
The kite hire is easy through Windswell but there is no windsurfer hire in Port. Green Island is the place. Oct can be a bit scratchy of the beach because the SE trades have usually lightened but... they are late this year so who knows. Talk to Toody at Green Island and he might hire you something good for the fortnight.

I have plenty of hire kit to chose from, happy to let you take it to port with you but you can't go pass Green for a sail.
PM me for more info
Just up to port douglas to escape the melbourne cold with the lady for a few days and very sad not to be able to get out on water for sail :(. Guy at tourist end of 4 mile has xover boards but no sails anymore - too expensive to maintain he said. South end nothing but sups and kites...
Tuesday thinking about GI but big investment for a few hours... Im still a beginner but ok at and getting into harness. Is there any chance a) that i could hire the right kit (160 - 140l board - certainly does not need to be anything special) and b) conditions would be ok - onshore 20ish knots?
just want the chance to plane in some tropical water instead of the 10 degree in the bay back home...
Im really surprised how inaccessible windsurfing is, i have another friend up at port douglas next weekend, same beginnerish level as me and would also pay just to be out on the water, it just doesnt seem possible :(
Thanks guys - you really do have some beautiful country up here - ginno

Hi Junior, if any wind you'll find us at Holloways now days, not so crowded. And yes do a trip to Green, you'll find most windy weekends some one else sailing over there.
Cheers Bob.

But quote...
"The grass was actually laid by old sailboarders so they would have a nice area to rig up on. They would come down and mow it. Now the council does that, an old bloke planted some palm trees to encourage the girls to lie under them. Still waiting for those to get big enough for that to happen."
I wasn't old then ![]()
and you need to take a look, the girlies are now using the palm trees, 20 years ago I knew what I was doing ![]()

No worries Ginno, turns out it's been great weather to hang out with the Lady anyway. But mate put Green Island on your list of things to do, there's a few Vicco kiters who do a few trips each year, cheap airfare, stay at backpackers and get a weeks boat pass to Green ![]()

Thanks also from me, Toody / Firie. I will organise a day trip to GI, so I will keep an eye on the weather and pick the windiest day ![]()
Might have to take some straps just in case I hire a rental with roof racks to go north ![]()
Cheers
