PLANS for a spectacular $5 billion development in the middle of the Gold Coast's Southport Broadwater have been unveiled by a Singaporean group.

Dubbed Wavebreak, the project - to be built on reclaimed land - would include two cruise ship terminals, casino, 1500-room hotel, 400-berth marina and trawler centre.

Cruise liners and high rise hotel/resort/houses will create a wind shadow and buffer.

Oasis cruise ship is 360m long

Theoretically could park along Wave Break Island if somehow could make sharp turn.
If not and just sink there we will have beautiful wrack for diving experience just about Sea World

Or some climbing experience - since after sinking to the bottom or our canal there still be 70 meters sticking above the water.

I wish it could sink like Titanic - nose first so will have the highest structure on Gold Coast , higher then any of our skyscrapers

surfers is probably the ugliest spot already, so why not build an island off main beach and be done with it. Close to shopping etc. won't affect anyone else

Everyone is trying to get the mega ships. It's basically a race to build the facility first and lock in the cruise companies because there is more mega ships than ports they can go to. Larger ports like Sydney and Melbourne can be booked out handing cargo ships. BUT, these ships need Food, Bev, Sewage disposal, Power, Water, Linen etc etc (not to mention 2,000 passengers on and off each day) in a limited turn around time so they almost need a small highway to service them. That's why the island idea is not the easier answer unfortunately.

Yes, the Gold Coast may be ugly but with Tom Tate being visionary enough to go to Vegas on a 'fact finding' mission there's always hope mate! It's a bit like me saying to my missus 'I'm go to Vegas to learn how to be a better citizen'. Wonder if she would by it?

Oh man my favourite flat water bank gonskies.
There is no way that it is to scale, those boats would struggle to be 50m long. They would take an entire side on the island.

I would love to know how a man made sandbank to stop rolling surf destroying the mainland become reclaimed land. Good lawyers I guess

Wave Break is about 1km across the proposed port side of the island so it is feasible. The thought of this project going ahead is unbelievable but i have a bad feeling some of our best flat water sailing spots in SE QLD will be shadowed from the wind forever. Lets hope an environmental impact study or something prevents this going any further.

Why the Stradbroke Island is not developed at all ?

I will have nothing against terminal going into the sea from that Island.
But such terminal needs also permanent land connection to main land, so this option is not viable.
So terminal going into sea opposite Sea World will be perfect.
Maybe such structure could provide some shelter to allow safer wave sailing ?

i heard the spit wall needs repairing 9newspaper].
repair and extend with a seviced jetty
large seas would affect it , so maybe extend the wall ?
a wall would affect the sand bars imo
i would hate to see wave break or the spit developed
