Heading to Elliot Heads for Easter and thinking about what windsurfing kit to take.
In what condition is the inlet for windsurfing?
In 2012, it was pretty well unusable. You had to sail out the front.
Could anyone post some photographs of its current state.
Was there in January when the cyclone hit. Unless its high or 3/4 high. No point sailing in the river. You can walk across to the island on a half tide.
I've been there on and off over summer. Best to sail out side. Or pick up a T-Bag like all the locals have. I wouldn't be in the river at easter time, it will be way crowded. Good luck though.
Just picked up on this , is Elliot heads silting up? Low tide was alway sailable but shorter distance in the river part? Can you sail over to the other side (the woodgate) side anymore? Is the floods washing river sand silt etc out and blocking up the system ? So sad to here if its the case, EH has to be possibly the best sailing spot in QLD as it had both flat water on the inside and BJ semi wave out the front.
Ever wondered why kiting is so popular? Shallow water would probably one if the single biggest reasons , sounds like another SE QLD river mouth silted up and shallow, ...what's the locals take on it, will it clear out over winter ?
This has been progressively been getting worse over the last few years. At high tide to 3/4 high tide it will be sailable. However all the traffic at easter time will be interesting to watch. Will be best to sail out the front or take a T-Bag. Here is a computer projection of what the river mouth will look like next easter at high tide.
At the moment during low tide there is a short run of about 300 - 400 m going up the river (with a small fin). There is enough room for several boards at the one time. To get across to Woodgate you will need to wait about 1 1/2 hours after low tide.
it's cleared the sand right out, the high tension lines have now been installed, so you just need to sail around the towers.
Sailed Elliotts' regularly past 4 months. Sand build up out front has formed some good banks from the seals club right down to the southern tip of Dr Mays' Is. Had the best waves ever last Mon/ Tues. SSE, above 1.4m tide. Coonar has great left hander off the point and back to waves inside. Main channel runs out there now and is sailable most of the time. Up river from the toilet block, bring a your bucket and spade.![]()
