Had a late arvo sail at Lake Weyba Tuesday. Nicked my leg with the fin. Water was churned up, muddy and warm. Got home feeling weak- fell asleep at 7.30. Awoke at midnight roasting (temp 40C) with rigors, almost delerious. Restless all night , nausea, so weak could barely get to the bathroom. Felt like I'd been poisoned. In bed all the next day with AC on and cold pack on my head. OK enough for work yesterday and today feeling much better. Small leg wound healing OK.
Anybody had a similar post-lake experience? Could have just been a coincidental virus I suppose but timing was sus. for having picked up a nasty from the lake...
Have had an infection on a knee scrape there once in summer, the water gets too warm, warm = bacteria, can be an issue in summer, especially if there has been no rain to flush it out...
Seriously, if you dont start feeling better really soon, you need to go see a Doc ASAP, I cut my leg open 4 stiches at Mudjimba this year, clean as a wistle, lovely nice cut, massive corky and bruise to go with it though, (which adds to the cocktail) on a Tuesday arvo, Thursday afternoon I was unconcious on a medical room floor, oxygen needles, ambulances called the works!
Though I was being a bit of a wus even going into the doc, but the pain had got OTT...result was strepticemia, which is basically blood poisoning (apparently cuts combined with bruising deeper the better and warm ocean water is the perfect strep recipe) and can kill you quite easily! It ate half my calf muscle away and took weeks to get any energy back, let alone beat it out of my system.
What you described are some of the symptoms, including yellowness around the wound.
Bit paranoid about water cuts now!....tea tree oils (and a chinese red ointment)etc all have been advised as needing to be applied asap to the cut. Dont much around with it, good luck.
Not good Kirgo, I normally found that lake Cootharaba with its tea tree was pretty good for cuts etc.
I sailed Moreton bay a bit after the Brisbane floods (there were signs everywhere saying not to go in the water!) ended up getting a bunch of weird infections in my eyes. In the end I had to have my eyelids lanced several times to get rid of the pus. Pretty gross. ![]()
I would go the Doc or ER as soon as this happened, they could take some bloods and see what you had. After the fact probably never know ........
Hope you feel 100% soon ![]()
Peter that sounds bad and Jonesysail that sounds awful. Black attack that sounds disgusting and painful
Peter how did you go with the 7.5 on Wednesday?
I had a bit of skin rubbed off from the footstraps and it surprisingly didn't get infected after my sail at the lake on Wednesday
Thanks everyone for your concerns. Thankfully I seem to be mostly back to normal; blood tests showed a slightly high white cell count so covering the bases with antibiotics. Interesting to hear of others experiences
Anne/greg good to see you, I Was a little clumsy on the 7.5 in those conditions so will rig smaller next time. .
Cheers
Pete
