I'm planning a 3 or 4 week trip to Cairns this "winter" and would like some guidance:
1) What slalom sails sizes are used mostly in June / July?
2) What are the normal sailing Spots around Cairns/Port Douglas?
- the rain has got to me here in Brisbane...![]()
Cheers
Dave
I think the normal slalom spot this June will be Green Island.

Hi Dave,
1) I'm around mid 80Kg and usually use a 95L Slalom with a 6.8 sail but do also use a 111L and 7.8. Also a 5.8 rarely on the coast more so at Green or when away.
2) Spots on the coast are Holloways, Yorkey's (lots of kites now) and Port Douglas. Water generally rough especially if windy and the wind is gusty.
The best spot up here is Green Island which is always windier than the coast, has clear blue water, flat water low tide and choppy high tide. Green has very good hire gear and you can get a cheap weekly pass on the boat.
Most of us sail Holloways and Port D, put the word out when up here because there are a few locals who always go to Green when the conditions are right.
I'll be at Burrum, hunt me out.
Cheers Bob
Thanks Guy's,
I'm definately looking at fitting Green Island in as a spot to go..
Thanks for the info..
I'll be coming up with sails between 7.7 & 6.1 so hopefully will be ok. Was trying to decide if I should stretch my finances more and get a 5.5 as well but sounds like I might get away without it..
Cheers
