Keen to head up to Burrum Heads (and surrounding area) for some sailing and fishing, and was hoping someone could tell me if there's much wind up that way in say September / October? Keen to sail the river mouth, and also want to pull a few fish in the kayak on Lenthalls Dam.
Any info would be great.
Cheers.
Hi Phil
In short, that is a good time to head up. Even better in Oct/Nov IMHO. The NE winds normally come & it is getting a bit warmer too
(not that you will feel our cool). Having said that, like anywhere you get your on/off days, luck of the draw really. Hervey Bay is very nice sailing but Burrum River has to be low tide & SE winds for the spped strip (if thats what you want).

Cheers Jeffro.
I was hoping to sail that speed strip, and I figured it was a s-e spot. So am I more liable to get nor-easters at that time of year? All goes well we will be aiming for the first week in Oct. Is that speed strip ok in a nor-easter?
I'm guessing easterly to NE winds but it is only a guess. Some of the Hervey Bay guys might post. They know the area better than me.
Should be some wind about then, hopefully.
Plenty of local sailors who are out everytime
there is wind,we use a messageboard on the web
to co-ordinate where we are sailing, which is very
useful and great for visiting sailors too.
There is a wide variety of spots to sail depending
on the wind/tide.
I think in a NE the northern speed run at Burrum would come
into play, apparently Burrum is also good at high tide too.
Sorry i dont fish.
Thanks Ploppy,
Been doing a little more research and it seems there's plenty of places to sail between Hervey Bay and Burrum to suit differnt winds. So it seems a case of fingers crossed for wind hey. Anything over 14 knts and I'll be happy. Oh, and none when I'm out fishing.
Cheers mate.
