Hello all!
I used to windsurf at every opportunity in my youth, and worked my way down from an 80's-tastc windsurfer express (daggar board, 25kg, several inches thick) which i used to rail-ride and sail backwards (because it was never getting anywhere quickly), down to a freebie 60L pocket-rocket from the early 90's. My kit is antiquated, the most interesting piece is a 7m sail which was an early cam design. :D
But i dropped out of the game several years ago due to injury, and have been longing to de-shed my gear ever since. I recently got everything together, and i'm now just waiting for some wind to pop up (can't believe i missed today!). My hands have long since shed their epic callouses, and absent is my coordination and balance.
I used to sail at golden beach and cootharaba, but i've moved south and need new spots. I hit wellington point once, but spent most of my time dodging outcrops of cungevoi, trying not to wipe my fin off.
What are the southerny flatwater spots to hit, without crippling currents (golden beach had a doozy!)? I could try wellington again, it's fairly close to me, i may have "done it wrong" last time i was out that way. :)
Would like to meet up with some people once i'm back up to speed (don't want to embarrass myself too badly!), i'm going to be struggling for a few outings on my big green board (a late 90's surfboard construction, bout 150L).
HI Cubits,
being a former sunny coast boy sailing golden beach, the lake and ,mooloolaba i hear you loud and clear.
i'd suggest if it's S-SE-ESE direction go to thompsons beach at victoria point.
sand/no current and lots of fun. low tide not as noce but still good.
if it's SW-W-NW-N-NE-E then the western side of wello is the place. at low tide it's mud but at high tide it's sand.
occasionally i hop on a super wide "formula" board.
i sold mine about a year ago to fund some new sails. still got my fins though!
i used to sail it a lot at the lake and golden beach back when you are talking. from 2000-onwards.
there was one year where i reckon i only used it and the 8.5m all year. well give or take a few sessions here and there on a 5.3m![]()
