Just had the best session of the year and on an old long board at Sandstone Point. I know, I know everyone says they are ** to use as they are big and heavy and not very maneuverable. Well guess what I had a blast. This board is very maneuverable, able to get out and back with in meters of where we were starting from. Mastering most of my tacks, didn't try gybes and cursing myself for not doing any.
The wind was a nice 15+knt NNE'er, blowing nicely across the beach. Flatish water with a nice 1/4m swell out of the beach, although flat up near the beach.
I rock up with an old Bombora Big Toy that was given to me as I love the old long boards. Rig up the 6.5m2 sail, doesn't work on the mast... Damit , hmmmm. I dont want to rig up my only other sail which is a 4m2 NP Wave, as every time I rig the 4m2 the wind dies on me.
Get on the water and the board takes off.... Heading out towards Bribie Island at a nice fast pace, thinking glad I rigged the 4m? in the end. I was a little over powered by the end of the session, but thoroughly enjoying my time back on the water after having a bit of a break with a recurring shoulder injury.
I have a short board (139L) I could have taken out, but I felt like going down the old school route and I am glad I did. If anyone hasn't sailed an old school board in winds like today, I dare them to come and experience it, Because all these people that say they are cr@p boards, probably haven't used them properly or given them a chance.
Best part of all, I took my 5yo Daughter out on the board, she was laying down on the front having fun for her first windsurfing experience. How many newer boards can take a passenger? The was one of the main reason I took the old board out, was to allow my daughter to be part of my hobby, which she has been asking to do for a long time. If I can get her hooked on Windsurfing now, We will have another member of the younger generation to continue the sport.
I hope everyone elses day has been as good as mine.
Cheers Damien
Good to see you are on the water again Damien.
I didn't think that sandstone point worked in NE?
That opens up some possibilities over the next few days :-)
I went to queens today - great day for the wave sailers
Cheers Jeff
Yeah it was a good morning out. Winds are not looking to good for the next week, but if it does decide to pick up again tonight, I will probably be out again tomorrow.
Sandstone Point works perfectly in a NE, I was a bit skeptical at first when I got there, The wind was blowing from left to right straight across the beach as you look to the water, Perfect runs straight out and back. The Family were sitting at the bench seat and I was starting and finishing from right in front of them.
Had something hit the back of the board today though, Thinking either a turtle or bloody big sting ray as it was in the shallows water near the rock beds on the right.
I would have to say it was the most clear water I have ever seen down there as well, seeing some nice large 40cm+ fish cruising past as I was sailing.
