I've sailed at Wello twice now both times on the West side of the sand bank in a SW-NW. I keep looking over the other side of the sand bank and the water always looks smoother. I haven't been prepared to give it a go due to the fact that it looks quite shallow. What's the go over there is it as shallow as it looks? Is it only shallow in places? If it is shallow how far out do you need to be to not have to worry about smashing your fin into the bottom or Rocks etc. My biggest fin is now a 32. If it is OK to sail over there on a "normal" fin how far either side of high tide is safe. I saw the guys freestyling out there on Tuesday but noticed one of the guys, i think he said his name was Mitch, was using a fin that was so small he may as well have used a 50 cent piece. I want to give Wello another go but don't know the area yet and don't want to rip the arse out of my board.
yeah mate its shallow but its pretty consistent in depth - consistently shallow that is.
The reef goes out for a couple hundred meters.
I only sail there an hour or so either side of high tide - not so much for the board or fins sake, more for how your face feels when smashed into rocks and reef.
Thanks for the reply boardboy. When you say consistently shallow how shallow are you talking. At high tide say is it knee, thigh, waist deep?
Hey. Yeah my fin is like 16. most of the time on tuesday it was from waist at most to knee deep as the tide dropped. there is some funky seaweed as the tide drops at the north east end. its flat and fun. pretty shallow but. I would like more windsurfing time.
I am not a regular but have sailed there like you when West, get yourself a small fin,30cm or less and whatch the locals, when that strip of sand is nearly covered your ok for about two hours, its hairy because the water is so clear and it looks even more shallow, generally its about knee high, take it easy the firts few runs, the further east of the sand bank the deeper, if you like speed its great and a beaut for powered up gybes.
