After a couple of months of battling with council, insurers and other organisations in an attempt to get the 2012 Wavesailing Nationals up and running on the Gold Coast, I regret to inform everyone that the event is now cancelled.
Getting organised with permits, an affiliated organisation for insurance proved too difficult on the Gold Coast.
Apologies to those sailors who have already made travel arrangements but I assure you, we wanted this competition to take place as much as you did.
We hope to one day run the Wave Nats on the Gold Coast again, but until such time as the council regulations and public liability restrictions are loosened, I don't see it happening any time soon.
Once again, I apologise to all.
Regards, Chris Powell.
Hi Chris
Why don't you just run it as a very 'casual' event,
There's not much anyone can do if we turn up and sail, happens every time its windy
Think of it like organising a rave party, you know what I mean.![]()
Why not run it as a casual event? cause it's the national titles.
That means you can't just send everyone out and pick a winner, you need to have heats, man on man, across multiple divisions and repechage where possible.
All this is pretty hard to disguise as a casual sail, along with the legal and liability implications should anything go wrong.
Sorry to be a kill joy, but it's the reality of both the event and the world we live in that many things need to be in place and sorted out before it can get underway. Unfortunately it is extremely difficult to get this sorted on the Goldy at the best of times when the water on any given weekend is full of people, let alone March already being a busy comp time on the coast with the Breaka and Quicky all happening in quick succession.
So, Nats aside, i read somewhere that you guys resurrected SEQ wavesailing? true? lets do an event! Or if thats too much of a pain in the ass, just all go smash some waves somewhere and grab a few snags and beers after
Hi Chris, this is a real pity. If it's not too late can you give me a call and see if we can't work through the issues.
The insurance thing is a breeze - as we discussed you simply need to tie in with an already affiliated club, which would make it easier than resurecting the SEQ club.
Can you give me a call regarding the Aquatic Permit. I never had any trouble organising them in the past and had a contact there who may be able to help out.
PS: I would really love to see a new wavesailing club established and I can give you all the necessary information and forms to make this process really easy if we can't resurect the SEQ wavesailing club.
