Gold and silver at the lake today.. That's broken north gold and north silver booms both fractured close to the clamp in the strong conditions.
Big thanks to all who assisted; the second time the rig was virtually unsailable and a long wade in the windy chop from the middle of the lake was saved by some legendary skill by a Good Samaritan (sorry ant remember your name). Anyway up hauling a broken, bent rig in strong wind and heavy chop with no up haul rope was quite something, and then to manage to sail it back in letting me use your kit. much indebted! Also to Greg who had sailed in to get me a spare boom and spent much time assisting.
Lucky to have such great fellow sailors ; hope everyone had a fab day sailing

Argh you lucky (and unlucky) bastard, would've been an absolute cracker of a day up at the lake.
Cootharaba seems to be claiming Norths booms as of late. My Gold broke in exactly the same place on the other side of the lake. Luckily for me it held up on the other side so I could still get home. At least you can always do the walk home on the lake if it comes down to it!
Didn't realize you broke two booms. There is nothing worse than getting good wind but missing out on it because of broken gear.

Sailcoothara, yep my first drama on the water and it was good to be able stand up. My neighbour"s from Cape Town and he had a kit failure there 3km out and had to ditch his rig and paddle his board back while shark"s fins surfaced around him. Give me the lake any day.

Boom failure at speed's an uncanny experience for anyone who's not had this. Both times there was a loud bang from the rig several seconds before the full break. The first time I was looking up at the sail wondering where the noise came from then suddenly flung back into the water like a rag doll - same as wiping out while water skiing. The second time (only 60 mins later) the warning noise had me ready but too late to do very much about it.
Both went in the same place next to the mast clamp. I had the clamp locked down pretty tight both times, could this have increased the risk of fracture?
