Just seeing who is heading up to SWR's over the Xmas break? Always good to have a few people to sail with, as there's usually no-one out most days.

Looking good so far, bath warm water, plenty of nor-easters and lots of sand in the corner (600 tidal sand flat) making for some fun runs in the shallows on high tide and giving the waves good shape and length off the point.

love that place for the surfing alone, the length of ride is unreal.

Actually trying to organise something last minute - any local secrets regarding accomodation?? Family of 6....

Is that compass overlay on the bay right? It seems to be out by 90 degrees.

Dunno if there's any secrets just email all the real estates and see what's availiable. Half the town is holiday letting. Good luck with it. Here's a start...

The compass is pretty accurate, perhaps just a tad off with East being where E-S-E is. It's pretty close though. The bay is on a very strange angle. Nor-east winds are actually offshore when you're on the jail side of the bay. South west winds are cross offshore for port side wave riding! Certialy thows most people off.

I shouldn't look at maps after a few beers. You're right with the directions and it is a top place for a sail.

We are heading up to mid north coast for Christmas. Hopefully the tradition of windsurfing on Christmas day can continue for 2012 with a fresh NE seabreeze at Trial Bay. Not too fresh though as I don't have any decent smaller sails.

The sailing used to be better there as the bay is silting up with sand. There are water speed advisory signs that are now high and dry. Unfortunately the sand will never be removed. The water used to come right up to the rocks in the first picture. That was about 20 years ago

Yeah, but there was no waves back then! Sand equals fun waves and nice shallow flats to race across- plus super easy getting back on the board after each run in. It's only in the corner 99 percent of the bay is deep, open ocean. Give me a yell when ya up Karl, wanna see ya catch a few waves.

I'd love to get there one time. Maybe try for after peak times next year .Whats it like in winter?

Hi Sue,

Winter is sweet. That second pic is mid-winter in a 15 knot s-wester- probably the best (cleanest) wind to sail Trial Bay. Here's another pic showing a typical playful winter "wave", which is cross-offshore lefts in a s-wester. Fun and non-threatening wave sailing in gin-clear, chest deep water.

Good practice for the open surf beaches.
