Hi everyone,

I have just moved to Sydney and need some help and advise on the windsurfing spots here. I am an intermediate windsurfer and have no experience with wave sailing. My gear is freeride, 110 lt board with sail range from 5 to 7. I went couple of times to Botany Bay, however did not see anyone on water. I would like to know how to pick a location according to the wind direction. Is there anything I should know about Botany Bay (I think, I will be coming there most often) regarding safety on the water, currents etc? Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Hope to meet you one day on water.

Cheers!

Currently we are in a string of westerlies so most people are going to either lake budgewoi (north of sydney) or lake illawarra (south of sydney) for flat water blasting. a few still sail in botany at Kurnel or La peruse in a westerly.

As we go into summer and the NE sea breaze starts to kick in you will see a lot more sailing at Kyemagh (next to airport) in botany bay.

Pic here i drew a few eyars ago - the green shows what wind directions work at each spot . red is off shore and patchy

Cheers

Hi Roar,

Thanks for the info and picture, it was very helpful. What is the most used sail range for Sydney? And one more thing, how safe is Botany Bay from sharks? After sailing only in seas and lakes I feel a bit nervous about NSW...

Very safe, last fatal shark attack at Kyeema , Botany Bay 1947. Occasional shark seen near entrance to Botany Bay.
chance of attack one in a million I would say.

It's not the sharks to be concerned about.Jet ski's can be a real worry down at the bay.they usually dissappear when it gets to choppy.
