I went to Ballina a few years back. Some good spots that I am told that the locals use, however I did not see anyone else out during the week. Up the coast road is Flatrock, a great place for wave sailors. I did not sail any if these spots due to my lack of skill, experience or anyone to sail with. This will not limit others though.

Ballina in the river gets good in a NE and a strong southerly. The area is now the shark capital of the world
although as mentioned the wavesailors go to flatrock as it can be sailed in NE & S wind.

Byron Bay (main bay) closest although not really suitable for S/SE.

Yamba I believe is popular for NE. There is a post on seabreeze.

Ironically some locals told me that they never had any problems with sharks at Ballina, even though there are dolphins with calf and even the odd whale going up the river.

The Clarence River at Yamba provides great flat water sailing in a strong NEer behind the old wave training wall. Launch from the beach on the southern shore of the river just inside the river mouth breakwater and head upstream.

Would you launch from the sailing club for Ballina?

At Ballina you can launch anywhere east of the boat ramp that looks good to you. You can also launch to the east of the bridge, just be aware of a few rocks off that little beach. Be especially aware of the tides as it can really get running in places. I didn't have much time today but had a quick sail just after high tide. Water was blue and clear all the way across the river. You can see my tracks below. Some very shallow water on the western end of my tracks. Also watch out for the rockwall on the south side, the big high tides like today has it sitting just under the water. At low tide it is exposed and makes some nice flat water. Wind can be pretty gusty and shifty in the river but somedays it is really good. Today was 15 to 30 knots and shifting from SW to S, to give you an idea.

I'm looking forward to trying Yamba. Is low tide best? Is mid tide pretty nasty with strong currents?

Yes, but I launched from the east end of the beach near the car park. You can also follow the wall to its end.
