I went to LG for the first time in Feb 2015. I love sailing new spots and sailing with lots of people. I had an absolute blast and sailed more in three weeks than I did the rest of the year back home. When the wind was on it was quite bumpy at Cocky's as the regulars said the weed was sparse, but I still loved it. The wind was so strong and consistent which is what we don't get at home, and what at least in my eyes, makes LG so special. The seabreeze is the breeze that happens, not a front, so it was very regular the 3 weeks I was there.

The opening of the lake to the ocean brings relief. I will be in Gerro in Dec which is my sailing trip this year, but I am already trying to wrangle a run to LG in Feb 2017 should the lake have enough water (weed or not).............. it is such a buzz to be fully lit on a 6.3 Race sail with acres of water in front and behind you and not have to plan your line around gusts. I can only imagine how intoxicating it would have been the previous years where it was Budgewoi flat across the whole lake - one day I would love to experience it like that as well.

Don't get too excited yet. We will need to see how the lake recovers for this summer.

LG or not, there is no such thing as a level playing field in this facet of the sport, especially in a casual comp that covers the globe. Even if the GPSTC was just NSW based, just look at the premier spots in NSW, nowhere else compares to Budgie and Primbee for flat water speed sailing........ everywhere else is a VERY DISTANT 3rd, forth, fifth ect. No level playing field in NSW unless you can utilise these spots easily. But I can live with that because I don't take the casual comp seriously.

Matty had a great idea when he was doing the Budgie Cup in Summer, that idea was a cracker for the Budgie based sailors though

In fact, one might reasonably argue that the 2015 summer when we had 40 or 50 sailors all at LG from all over Australia was about as close as we will probably get.

Personally, I just enjoy the challenge of chasing the best conditions I can find and doing the best that I can do. There is always someone, somewhere faster....

That's a pretty good pitch. I'm sure I will get there too when it's back. Sounds like a great spot.

My 2 1/2 weeks in Feb 2015, were the best sailing I've ever done. The consistency of the wind, reasonably flat water and most importantly the gathering of so many good sailors, made it unique. Well worth the 4,500 km return drive.

Just as many PBs to be had a in local waters. Might not blow as often here in NSW, but there's just as much potential for top numbers if you're on your game. I don't think this really came out the right way, so apologies if seemed hot headed. Lake George is definitely on my bucket list. As mentioned, we only get those big frontal systems for a day or two, so I do like the appeal that LG has such a consistent and strong sea breeze. And I totally agree that traveling to new places is exciting in itself and the camaraderie that comes with it is a far greater aspect of such a trip than climbing the gpstc ladder.

Feb 2015 Big Gear Day: 7.9m KA Race and 69 wide board (Falcon 113), 30cm Vector Slalom Weed. Great fun on a low wind day.







Feb 2015 Medium Gear Day: 7.1 KA Race, Falcon Speed 51 wide, Vector Speed Weed 25. Almost loosened my teeth on this day - should have taken the wider tailed Falcon Slalom 79 to pop over the back of the little rollers rather than THROUGH them, which is what I did towards the end of the trip, I abandoned the speedboard and actually got better scores and more comfort and enjoyment. On all boards the gybes were super sweet on the inside where the little rollers dissipated but it was also super duper shallow.

Unless it was light I stayed over at 5 mile as it was flatter there but it was also gustier as it's side offshore a bit in a SE .Still even with it being patchy for LG it was better than up here!
