Saw the photos of Pt Walter and keen to give it a go. I have sailed there before but only after cruising up from Melville.

I know there's reef/rocks (I used to think it was a sand spit )

Any guidance on this location will be greatly appreciated

Depends a lot on the tide. It is always shallow and short fins are advised. But stay away from the area I cut out, between the Jetty, the boat and the sand bar. There are a few rocks just NE of the cutout area but in most tides you can sail over them. Just be careful if starting there and not yet on the plane.



Word of warning. Wind direction is important. SteveM and SteveS and I had an incredibly frustrating day there yesterday. The wind came straight over the highest part of Mosman Park causing it to vary between 3 and 23knots in 50metre wide bands. It also swung 30-45 degrees from one band to another. However it is so flat I still managed a 36.8 on the dial.

Best is highish tide and wind from S-SSW when it comes straight up Blackall Reach.

For speed , 28 down tho' if you have slalom kit 29-30 would be ok but if you can see 30 cm of rocks protruding where you launch then you will have to stay out a bit.

There are some shallow sand patches half way down about 50m out. Don't slow down there. You can go inside. It is relatively deep near the bar but the bar has doubled in height over the last 2 years as grass grows so while it used to be fast going as close as posible now there is a wind shadow and you are better being a bit further out. Main prob is there is usually a big lull in the middle. Get through that and there is usually a nice kick at the end.

i did notice some rocks down at the other- north west end of the run also,how ever these seemed lower in the water and thus not so much of a problem as the ones where yo yo noted.
i think we really need AUS1111 and Claude to fully sail the place and then we will know where all the rocks are !

nah he would get laughed off the beach here the moment he pulled out 1 of his beloved weedys!!

im lost but hey, the tide is really low atm and even the kiters where running aground and i only need 7cm to edge or 1cm to skim. the rocks i normally hit where dry today

It's true, there are 2 rocks right at the end . I even had them waypointed in my foretrex... but it died... However, they are quite small and not close to the surface and you need a large fin and some bad luck to hit them... It can be done, one unfortunate hit it on his first run but I've sailed there hundreds of times and only hit them walking back to talk with others who have stopped at the end to compare speeds. Most tides you'll go right over them with anything less than a 30.
The kiters sometimes sail on the other side in an easterly. It has even more rocks down the bottom (car park) end.
