Key ingredients, big board, small sail and light wind- plus a few lessons. As you progress everything will be reversed- small board, bigger sail and strong wind. It's a tough and challenging sport. Extremely rewarding and a total buzz when the pieces start to fall into place- and pretty cruel when they don't. Think of sail boarding as surfing when there's no swell You should get (or find) plenty of info on here.

Not sure which part of the lake you live on (its a big lake!) but you're welcome to come up to the Sailing club at Marmong Point (George St) next Saturday from 1:30pm onwards and you can meet up with a lot of windsurfers. We have a starboard start beginners board that you can have a go on and we can give you a few pointers. Ask for a guy called Barry :)

Just started my self about a month ago
here are all the same question you ask

it a shame "wind and snow" shop aren't running any demo days until next summer

but ring around see if u can demo a board

personally i just got a 80 cm viper and full rigging from belmoral sailing
( near deewhy, northen beaches )
johnno is a bloody champion

book a learn to windsurf with him , think it about $200 then buy one off his 2ndhand boards


if i could turn back time i would get a 100 cm board as i am soo unco and have no balance
( but i just need practice- i have no surfing or skating boarding exp)

but with your history of surfing , i think you should be fine

PS - dont buy any **** off ebay , i did that and regret it ever since
