The biggest difference between Mitsu Aus, Ford Aus and Holden is the amount Holden export. They export half the cars they make these days. Then there's the engine export side of things.
Holden do have a reasonable export market for the Commodore, however the sales of the Monaro (Pontiac GTO in the states and Vauxhall in the UK) were poor enough to stop production.
Not sure about the engine export comment, the Alloytec is made in Australia, however it is produced in far greater numbers in Canada and the US. The L98 V8 in current Commodores is also produced OS.
As for not seeing a 500HP front wheel drive, here is a 498FWHP (gets that dyno read at the end of the video) Honda Civic from the states
