was just scrolling through some of the buy and sell stuff and started thinking. How old is your every day board. iv spent many happy hours scooting around on a 74L FSW that i piced up for a few hundred $$$ about 2004-6 i guess
seems to be some deals to be had if you dont mind a few years and the odd repair or dent. whats your thoughts people having said this i do think a rig that is alot newer can make or brake any board / rig combo

22-24yr old Bic Metal Rock 139lt, 3.05m x 60cm, 12kg Freeride LW. Awesome board perfect for me to learn on. gets on the plane easy in 15-20knot winds and goes fast enough to keep me on the edge for now. Not looking to upgrade for a long while yet.

The boards I tend to use seem to be centred about 2005 or 2006. I think its the price point where I don't mind buying yet another board, and I don't mind breaking/repairing them.

I do admire the look of more modern boards, but I know with the way I sail, they would all look second hand after a season with me I don't think I could handle the stress of trying to keep them looking pristine.

Also, with a newer board I would be less tempted to add footstrap inserts all over the place

My everyday board is only a few months old, I have a board from about 2008. A fanatic FSW 95 that I keep going back to time and again, A board that I love and will keep till the end...

But your right, There are some good buys on the buy & sell at the moment. Just got myself a sweet deal on a nude chopper 99

Agree with you on sails, decided a few years back that that was where the hard earned cash is best spent (plus good rig components) so until recently my main board was 13 years old (2000 freeride purchased ex-demo). Got a new no-cam slalom sail last year and quickly found the top speed for the board every session. Now have my dream board 2011 model (boards seem like cars to me - not much point in buying new).

Similarly on the small board back in 2009 I went from a 1999 87L freeride to a 2006 freewave 78L. That was a first big step into modern wider boards - had to find a new stance (changed to waist harness at same time - so it was all completely foreign in feel for a while). I think it was around 2001 to 2005 where the designs really changed. Not sure other than the recent - fins "arms race" that things have changed that much since. One mag suggested they had got a bit too wide and are now coming back.

thats my thoughts too i have brought new boards in the past and cant say i wont in the future ether but for me the way i sail and use the kit makes it easy to spent $400 - $ 600 and get the same water time as apposed to spending $ 1000+ and being worried about dinging it better spent on sails and good rig components in my honest opinion

Main boards are a I think a 2009 Tabou Rocket 135l and a 2005 Tabou Rocket 105l. Thinking of getting one board that's about halfway in between.

2009 Tabou FS 100
2009 JP FSW 84
2009 Starboard Evil Twin 80

Sails are mostly 2010.

I very rarely have brand new boards. I'll probably replace everything after another 2 seasons, but with secondhand / previous season stuff. Unless I break something first.

Tabou rockets are featuring in this thread, the board most likely to be kept forever?

My '08 115 has done a few nautical miles. 2 years since it snapped almost in two, the controversial repair (www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/General/Repair-your-own-boards-like-a-Boss/?whichpage=2&index=39) is still strong but the deck has collapsed below the 64. I've acquired a 105 while it's in for another repair. The 105 definitely sails one size smaller. Get one half way between by all means Moby, but I don't think one will replace two.

Cripes what did you do to snap it? I get the impression they are pretty durable and well built..I'd love a 105 or 115 to go in between my 125 & 95..If I win lotto I'll do that + get a trailer to carry it all..[}:)]
Ps .. your 115 looks crap..I'll take it off your hands..

I've also got a rocket 115L 2010 model the ltd carbon version great board I've done plenty of km's on it but it's also delaminating in front of the rear foot pad like Iank's and is starting to take on water so retirement is imminent.

Well i was trying to gybe on the front of some swell, got out of balance and a piece of chop threw me off up into the air. The rocket sailed on without me into the trough, I followed in a parabolic arc and slammed into it. Sort of like what those those world championship wrestlers do to an opponent after climbing the turnbuckles. I was sore, but it sailed back to the beach OK.

Waddya mean it looks crap? Looks beautiful to me.

Holy moley Ian, is the soft deck repair also going to add another cm or two to the deck height?

Are you two doing the repair? For one of my boards I did the repair from the top by injecting polyurethane and then a few layers of carbon and glass over the top to seal it off. For the other I cut it out from the bottom, vacuum bagged another layer of divinycell to the inside, and back filled with polyurethane and lumps of styrofoam. Not very pretty, but seems solid (well as solid as styrofoam can get), and looks good.

Both repairs seem bullet proof, and I am not sure which method is better. I guess it comes down to whether you want to destroy the graphics or not. On the board I did from the bottom, the graphics on the top are all intact, and the bottom looks the same as any other.

Maybe Barn could have dressed up the repaired section to look like a giant bandaid? You may as well make it a feature!

Rocket mentioned again (maybe because they've taken over where the legendary Mistral Flow left off?):

2010 Tabou Rocket 95 LTD (purchased second-hand in 2012)
2006 JP FSW 85 (another 2012 purchase and in really good cond for $300)

Years ago I stuffed around with an old NP 6 cam race sail and so glad to be rid of clunky sails like that! Now use no-cam freeride sails which have improved so much in the past 10 years.

What I would like to be my everyday board is a 2006 SB Sonic. I still have it but the last few seasons have been so dismal I would have to say my everyday board is a 2008 111 SB Futura. The Sonic has a couple of professionally repaired dings but both boards are in really good shape despite their years. I am currently drooling over a 2012 80L iSonic in pristine condition, but it is hard to justify the expense of updating.

My sails are all 2010/2011. The 6.4 which has had the most use (because it goes with the Futura) is starting to wear out and needs to be replaced.

Everything was purchased second hand, mostly through seabreeze.

I gotta say, new boards are great, but I ask myself whether the worry they incur (dont wanna ding it) is worth the trouble. The older boards I own are the ones I do crazier stuff on, because there would be a certain amount of "meh" if I snapped them in half......

My everyday board is a 2010 JP Xcite 110L model. I can use it in most conditions. But I recently brought a 2008 Fanatic Eagle 126L for lighter days but am finding it pretty heavy and a bit slow. I also just brought a 2008 Exocet Warp Slalom 80L mainly for a challenge which I am loving. I have a range of sails from 4.6 to 7.0

The JP Xcite will handles all conditions for me and I really think it is best for my style and age (72kg & 62yrs). I can keep up with most of the other guys on freeride style boards. Haven't got or used a GPS but getting keen to try so I can judge and improve myself.

I buy just about all of my gear 2nd hand via Seabreeze.
