My biggest sail is an 8.5. I don't use it because when the wind is right for that I prefer to rig my 6.5 wave sail for light wind freestyle. I find sailing with a big rig is fun for a while but the rig is unwieldy and all I can do is plane and gyyyyybbbbbeee and plane. It gets boring before it gets tiring. Still its good for a quick fix.

Thanks Gestalt,

I'm pretty much sold on my formula board now i think. It's just a matter of cash for now. I'll remember bout the fin too. Even if I could just knock off 4knots from my low plane level I estimate I would get at least 35% more sailing in. When I bought my 8.5 (previous biggest was 6.5) I easily doubled my sail time.

Wal I know what you mean about not being able to do as much with the bigger sail but against recommendation I do take it out into the waves. Probably won't much anymore because I've broken 2 booms jumping with it.

Thanks again for the tips.

Hey Rick23, Yes some of the footage is from Stomio. We were lucky to have great sponsors with Subaru,,,, yet unlucky to have no wind over that particular weekend and no races. Our new Greek Formula Association, scrounged up enough funds to pay some guys to produce a promo video of the season. This was done in an effort to aid in securing sponsors for next season. Most of the footage of planing/racing was actually shot in a place called Drepano, One of the greatest windiest flat water locations in Greece. About 15/20 mins drive from Patra, Peloponisos. The website ,,,, http://formula-windsurfing-association.gr/index.html

Another good formula video from Greece. Was when Sean O'brien came and raced our nationals. The event was held in Schinias, Marathon. Check it out if you want,,,,www.aus120.com/regatta-reports/2008-reports/2008-greek-fw-championships-athens-greece/

Good winds,
Relax and go fast,
GRE 200

Just to pump this topic for everything it is worth...

Curious to know where any Victorian sailors bought their formula boards?

There is only one on Buy & Sell from Tassy advertised as a 2004 even though the board says 2002 on the photo for $700, think it comes with a sail and boom, the ad is a bit confusing. Unsure if 2002 is a bit old and how to get it from Tassy.

SHQ has no used formula and I'm not really not interested in buying a new one and I can't even find any used formula boards on Australian websites. Is it just not that popular in Oz? I am guessing posting would cost a fortune too.

Still months away from buying one but still would like to see my options. Any advice?

Hey Leman,

If your after a second hand kit, Im currently have my mates formula kit (been storing it for him for about 12 months now!) which is a starboard board w/cover, not sure the year but can check, NP boom, 9.8m sail but no mast. He broke it last year, and couldnt be bothered buying a new one, so we are storing it!

He mentioned last week that he should sell it, so if you keen to have a look, i'll double check on the price with him. Im in melbourne aswell.

Whats's the model number of the board? 158, 159,160,161? We can work out the year from that

Probably not much for sale this year, as the formula rules changed, so that manufacturers can only update their design once every 2 years, and we are in the middle of the period now.

So no real reason to sell last seasons board as it is still current. This also translates to no flow on effect for the guys on older boards selling to update to newer secondhand boards.

Thanks Matth, mind if I just take note of you user name for a later date. I have zero chance of affording a board this side of summer because I am meant to be saving for a trip to Thailand.

But just like Chris said I would definately need the year and size of the board since design has changed and I am possibly turning down a $700 2002 starboard also including sail and boom.

Feel free to put it up for sale, if I'm still interested at the end of summer I'll contact you and see if it's still up for sale.

Thanks again.

The model number on the board is 186

That would make it a 2002 board
