i was keen to hear thoughts on board racks.

is 19mm dowel strong enough? i was going to pva glue it into 70x35 stud frame on a slight angle.

I have seen 28mm dowel used to good effect before.

Bolt two lengths of 2x4 to the wall. Drill 28mm holes in it. Stick dowel in holes.

19mm might not be strong enough.

I used 25mm dowel and doubled up the 2x4. It works a treat - simply drilled 25mm hole and pressed it in. No need for glue etc fit is tight enough

Used to use dowel but after a couple of years the dowel either snaps or pulls out due to years of movement not good to find boards all over the garage floor

Just switched to a metal system from bunnings ($140) awesome each rung will hold 75kgs
The best thing is its so easy to adjust the height and you can always add more levels after

What about a standup rack or is that not an option. Far less to worry about as far as accidents are concerned.

I made my racks out of 70x35mm treated pine. I'm a chippie so it was easy. Its problably over kill but they are solid and light. Took my 20 mins with a tek gun and a drop saw. They are screwed to the side of my shed.
I made them when i was living at Pt More in gero(scrounged the timer from site bins). As it was a rental the racks were easily removed and taken with me.

they look the goods but id stop using if i was you, look at what they have done to the nose rocker of that blue board!!!

I had some old broom handle (about 19mm?) in mine for a while but that shelf usually got used for sails and booms, and it did have a fair bit of flex, go bigger if you can. I also had 30-40mm stuff drilled into 2x4s and they held great.

cheers for all of the feedback. seems 19mm is no good.

i was going to whack something up on the wall with soft pine and dowel.

i can't go vertical becasue i have some old school board's that are to long. although i really like the simplicity of your setup buddha.

Bender has inspired me to put a bit more effort in. your racks are great.

i drew something up today, ended up with a combination of all of the above. a bit of horizontal rack and some vertical sections also.
will go with hwd and stain it.

cheers.

hey, nice setup pirrad. i need a trailer but i keep looking at gear instead of wheels.

Here's mine:

I tried the broom handle idea, it worked, but if you bump into them when blundering around the shed then they do break easily
